Yeah I would suspect too much water caused your seed to fail. All these hurricanes. BTW an extension agent can tell you about your soil. I would hit a Southern States and get your own blend of seed. Much cheaper than "deer seed". Clover does well as a perennial, white or dutch being good cheap species. Mix this with some "cool season" grasses like timothy or orchard. Alfalfa may do ok as a autumn planting depending on your region of NC. I'd call the game warden for your area and ask him what's the best to plant in your region. For all around cheap seed for fall, winter wheat is great because it has a much higher value for the deer than rye and is more attractive. It does well all winter here in VA. But clover can last 3-5 years if maintained right.

Actually gentlemen, the plot was inbetween my powerlines. It is and area that is very low and hold water well. I dont know if there is a way to 'raise' the ground there except for dumping loads of new soil on whats already there. I have some plans for it, but it will have to wait til spring until I do anything to it. As of now I am just letting it be. I am putting out corn, which seems to help some. Also, we are planning on thinning out and/or clear cutting about 40 acres mainly to sell timber and then to make several plots.
Thanks for all the info, also didn't mean to hijack ILL BUCK's post ;) |

Go in there tomorrow and seed some cover crop rye, just work it a little to disturb the soil, spin on or broadcast the rye ( not ryegrass) and float over it with a chain link or something , leaf rake enough to get a little dirt on it, then walk away for awhile, you still have time for this to work, but get to it soon.....

Disc it if you need to , then seed it and float it. If you have to disc it you might as well disc it a couple inches..
