Default Acorn or southern nut?

In the opening scenes of a mossy oak video they show a closeup of a hand by the ground picking up some kind of nut. To me it looked like an acorn but it was the size of a golf ball. Is this a southern nut I don't know about?

What you described is not anything I am familiar with. The White Oak acorns are hardly ever larger than .50 caliber round ball. My guess is that it may be a Hickory nut that is still in its husk. That would be near golf ball size. Shag Bark Hickory (that's Scaley bark in the South, y'all) could even be larger with the husk on, but out of the husk much smaller. A Walnut could be that large, but they wouldn't be food for deer, the shell is extremely hard.

A sawtooth oak has the largest acorn I've seen. I'm not that familar with MO opening. If you want to identify the fruit try this site. http://www.oplin.lib.oh.us/products/tree/

This site lets you identify a tree by it's fruit, leaf or name.

Here in Fla. we do have a few whit oaks, not very many at all.we put 10-10-10- fertilizer around them and the live oaks each year to have better crops of acorns.
The white oak does have acorns the size of maybe a ping pong ball.not all the time nor all the crop. the red oaks have some the size of a quater.

I saw a show and the were picking up white oak acorns, may be the one you saw.

That site mentioned above was informative but didn't find it.

Could fertilizer make a huge difference in nut size. Say like the Bur oak acorn?

I am going to look at the video again to make sure of the size.

I know it wasn't a walnut. It looked like an oversized white acorn.
Smooth outer shell.
