Check with your local state forest service, in our area they have a machine that looks like a real big rotor tiller that clears a path about 8' wide. Cuts up EVERYTHING and pulverizes it, mixing it with about the top 5 inches of soil. They say it will gnaw down and pulverize a 16" red oak. The charge is minimal, and may be just the thing you need to open up some lanes.

DanO,
The article sounds great, but. The cutover property is not mine. Don't think the owners would be happy with anyone messing around with their pine plantings. Two of the plantings have absentee owners that don't live in the area.
Timbercruiser,
I'm pretty sure that our local forest service does not have that equipment. They mostly work with small dozers.
Ostdc,
I may have to buy stock in Sthil. Have a 24" Sthil and a big weedeater capable of handling a blade. It may take most of next summer, but there will be trails, if my health holds. Also have one plot that can't handle the traffic, so will try and enlarge it with my backhoe as there is lots of brush around it. It will be a busy summer.
