I was at my camp in WV when I came across these fruits, the ripe ones kinda smelled like pears, there were growing from grey colored trees and the dried ones where purple.

If it' s a paw paw, it will smell similar to a banana. It will have a couple large seeds in it as well. The ones on my farm are green and then turn a light yellow and then the coons and deer eat them up. It may be some type of plum. I have several wild plum trees and they are purple after falling off and the trees are grayish with flaky bark. They are usually about like a quarter in size though.

Pawpaw. Banana custard texture and taste. Large, dark seeds about the size of a nickel. The tree leaves are single, oval (tongue shaped), and droop down from the tree. When you taste it remember that the trees depend on carrion flies for pollination. I have to go searching for roadkill during flowering. The fruit will be yellow to black when it' s ripe.
