If I plant a perennial clover plot in the fall, will the plot stay alive year round? Are does it die in the summer?

Here it dies back in the winter, and many varieties die back in the summer too. If you mix some red clover in with your white, you will increase the summer forage available.

Variety selection makes a big difference and it has a lot to do with where you are and the local climate.

In the hot dry summer climate here in Arkansas the clover dies down, but usually comes back in the fall when the temps drop and rain picks up. I plant soy beans in May which grows during the summer pretty good. Rainfall is the key.

Plant 4-6# of white clover along with some cereal grains (rye, oats, peas) and you should have a great stand of clover come the following year and for the next couple of years. This also gives the deer something to eat during hunting season for the first year. Clover will feed deer during all but the harshest winter months. Even then the deer will dig for what little clover they can scrounge and it should bounce back the following year. Pretty hard to kill an established white clover plot. Red clover is faster to establish, but it is an annual and will only last one season.

I have one patch of Yucci Arrowleaf white clover that has reseeded itself for close to 7 years without having to be replanted.
