Default Fire as management tool.

I am curious how many of you are using or considering using fire as a management tool to create more deer forage? If you are, let us know how you are using it as far as frequency and rotation.

I am going to try it for the first time if conditions allows me this year. This technique has me a little spook to be honost. Smokey the Bear has brainwashed me for too many years.

I hope that you have the local/state forestry reps involved when you try this. Grass fires are one thing, to keep an area in grass, but timber fires require much more skill, preparation and knowledge. If things get out of control you can do what a local did: just tell the fire department that your wife was smoking carelessly.

He took crap for months after but at least he didn' t get charged.

Fire is a great habitat enhancer. The ash wil put some phosphrus back into the soil and allow some seed/sproe to germinate. The tender growth is what attracts bugs and wildlife...

Great, cheap way to help timber and wildlife, but be sure to have professional help that has insurance.
