Default Types of Oak trees

I know the acorns from white oaks are supposed to be a hot food source, but does anyone have any experience with other oak trees? It seems like most of the Oaks here are Bur Oaks.

Bur Oaks are in the white oak family and as such, the acorns are as desireable as the true white oak. Deerwillgladly eatthe acorns of any oak tree. Howeveracorns in the white oak group have much less tannin in them than the red oak group and are preferred.

Swamp chestnut oaks are the best that I know of. I think that they are a more desirable nut than the white oak. If you get lucky enough to find one, every deer in the county will come to it.

Bur oak seems to be the most popular to plant up here, which is the reason for my question. most of the others seem to be better suited to the more southern cimates.

Are you looking to plant trees? If so you are looking at 20 years at least before you start seeing any kind of crop. I would find existing trees and release them (cut the competeting vegetation around them on at least three sides) and fertilize them.

i think you'll find a general consensus amongst whitetail biologists that whiteoaks are the preferred nut of choice by deer...the only problem is it takes approximately 40 years for them to produce a respectable crop

I raise sawtooth oak trees. They can grow up to 5 feet a year and produce acorns normally around 8 to 10 years in my area. And they are a nice looking tree.

The acorns of the whiteoak are preffered of the whitetail, squirrels, and turkeys. They are the first to start dropping and then the red, black and other oaks will fallow.

Dwarf Chinkapin oaks are a member of the white oak family, low in tannins, and produce acorns in I THINK around 3-5 years. Our landhas agood manyWhite oaks and others from the white oak family like the Swampchesnut oak (we got more of those than white oaks). The next most populated oaks around hereare the water oak and the pin oak, which are preferred after all of the bigger more hearty acorns have been wiped out. I'm gonna be huntin over three big ol' persimmon trees on opening weekend, forget the nuts!
