Has anybody thought of using Alfalfa pellets instead of corn? I would imagine they might have moisture problems in a feeder but broadcasting on the ground could work, perhaps in a trough type feeder?

I have an old combine bin on wheels and I am going to try again this year to have it filled out in the field from the combine. Last year I got some from a friend of mine and the trailer holds about 2500# and when I went to pay him he actually wouldn't take anything for it. Bet I won't find that kind of deal this year. I think the price to the farmer is about $5 per bushel. If I could pay that It wouldn't be too bad.

buying it by the ton is really the way to go with corn, just picked up another load on friday, prices actually came down from this spring and are at $215 a ton, that comes out to $5.37 for 50 lbs, a lot better than paying 10 bucks like some of you guys are.

That's great if you have a place to store it. My only option would be to kick the wife's truck out of the garage, and that's not happening anytime soon.

The price of corn on the Chicago Board of Trade is 4.99 right now. At our elevator our cash price out the door would be 4.74 per bushel. Our high this spring/summer was 7.39 I think and yes it was mostly attributed to the flooding and the scare that there wasn't going to be enough corn, but now the weather has been good for the most part and predictions are excellent for the corn crop this fall.

a 55 gallon drum will hold about 350 lbs of corn, they cost about $5 around here, just buy 1/2 ton at a time and store it in 3 drums, to give you an idea of how much 1 ton is, a short bed truck full is a little over 1 ton

Thanks, that might actually work.I'll justhave to get the logistics of getting the corn to the feeders figured out. I don't have an ATV and my feeders are notwhere you can just drive rightup to them.
