Alfalfa needs to be cut about every 28 days. Are you set up to do that?

ralphie; why do you need to cut alfalfa every 28 days? I get 1-2 cuts a year off my property with the climate of up state Michigan and 2-3 cuts per year from my property with the climate of southern Ohio.

A decline in protein. Also it tends to get "stemmy" if left growing, like some let clover grow. Do a little experiment this summer- leave a strip uncut all summer. Other than cover it will be just about useless for food, esp when compared to well maintained alfalfa. Clover is much lower maintence for the average hunter and his plots.

ralphie; the maximum nutrient accumulation is at the early bud stage, when you should be cutting it for hay. If you cut more often you're just thinning out the stand because everytime you cut the plant, it has to draw resources from the roots.

Alfalfa works great. Especially if it is the right kind or the right blend. However, if you are coastal you may find that your plant will contract a type of mold.
