RE: Native grass?
Feel free to jump right in there farmhunter. Thinking about native grasses in the area you were considering oats?
Thanks Brian for the info.. Im going to give the grass alot of consideration, especially if I can get it at a discounted rate from one these orgs. mentioned. Im putting in two different 5 acre areas of permanent cover and I may go with the grass in one of them.
Brian over this 3 yr. establishment period what is recommended as far as mowing heights go to control the weeds? The area I plan to plant will be encompassed by young pines, should I leave an area unplanted between these trees and the grasses for a fire break or can I get by just mowing it.

RE: Native grass?
The grasses are best used as a cover. They really do not contribute to nutrition. We suggest that they be used on the borders of pines to block wind and on the banks of marshes and streams.

Thanks for the input as well, I want to look into it further - and maybe order some if I can find a source locally (or on the internet) -
Yes Pilot, the 2-3 acre section I have in mind is 5.0 Ph, and too close to the cabin to offer secure feeding, a good part of the year. Its part of a 15 acre field we are breaking up - and if a tall perenial grass with a robust root system is available, I'd like to explore it.
What are the actual names - is it Bluestem, and Switch Grass???
Does it reseed naturally? And finally - Brian, you indicated it does not invade very much, would it be OK planted up against a clover plot, what about corn?
Thanks.

RE: Native grass?
In my search to "create a better bedding area", I'm wondering about whether planting something like this would work. The end result would seem to be great, but the question is, how much work would it take, and will it take off. I'm trying to find something to plant in an area of woods that has a somewhat open canopy, mixed hardwoods, pines, and laurel. I'm tyring to thicken up the area as a whole. Is there anyway to plant something like this in a wooded environment? Or would there be something better. ????
