I know what you mean about the owl. Some of my best times deer hunting was watching minks, hawks or having grouse land next to me in the tree.

What is a Bovine TB area?

Something you don't want... We have Bovine Tuburculosis in the State of Michigan and the wildlife managers have decided that many of the areas in the state have an over crowding problem which is believed to exaserbate the spread of TB. If the state looses it's TB free status it means that the cattle and such will need to be cornteened. BIG money, lot's of problems.

So the state has increased the deer harvest to lower the deer population? What about other warm blooded animals in the area?

They are a problem. TB has been reported in racoon and coyote so we may expect just about anything that scavanges will have it... This cold weather is a blessing. It should rid the state of many sick animals. And since the TB droplets are spread by respitory inhalation the frozen carcasus shoul not present the problem a warm body would, like steam.

It is interesting to see you fellows talk about how much top soil and PH for the clover. In my area of northern Mississippi, you are lucky to get a place for a food plot that has even one good inch of topsoil. I usually have to work with mostly clay and some spots that may be sandy. But don' t worry, I planted the Ladino clover and the clover doesn' t seem to mind. Limed and fertilized and it is in its 3rd. year. Very thick in my one plot on the edge of a hayfield. Growth in a monitor cage is 24 inches, but the field height averages 6-8 inches. Something seems to be cropping my field. Two new plots this year, just coming on. About 2-3 inches, but a healthy green. Turkeys are the only problem, stripped a circle in the middle of one plot. Will overseed later. My plot may not be scientific, but it' s Clover.

Russ otten states that turkeys stripped a circle in one plot, my question for anyone who might know is do turkeys eat the clover, are they scratching it up to get at insects or do they eat the nodules on the roots?

Thanks,
JKT

They eat the clover! There is no clover left on the ground where they pulled it out. Also, My hunting buddy checks the crop of any turkey he harvests, and the crop on some were full of clover. Proof positive, huh?
