cockleburrs, ragweed, johnsongrass, and waterhemp seem to do really well in just about any soil.
maybe try planting some buckwheat. in a year or two it'll add alot of organic material to your soil and make it better.

Peanuts...thats what we plant in sandy soil in eastern NC...Deer and turkeys love them...the peanut vines have as much protein as alfalfa...If you have bears in the area..they will also come to them when the peanuts are mature and dig them up..I have had to kill several because of this.
If you want to wait till fall...its hard to beat wheat/oats/rye...for just pulling the deer in...
