bailing food plots
#1
Just curious to see if anyone has tried to bail their food plots. I bushhogged mine a month ago and it killed everything that was under where the chopped grass ended up at. I thought that it may be better to bail it up and feed it to the cows.

If you have clover, alfalfa, or anything else that can be bailed and used for cattle sell it and make a profit. I am converting part of my meadow field that is bailed for hay into a clover and alfafla food plot/hay field later this fall. I will have my neighbor bail it for his livestock and make a profit to pay for the installation and maintenance.

I've done both - and I'd suggest you mow it earlier or higher to stop the cut forage from smothering the plot.
You can bail it - and sell- but when you do - you take away - all the N-P-K that you put down, plus decent anounts of Calcium and other trace elements. Why not clut it more often - and let the residue "go back" into the plot?
My 2 cents - If your soils is Xtra fertile - then sell it off - why not?
But - If you work hard to get it up to par - then protect your investment - and cut it - or turn it under every year or two.

You bail a boat...and you bale hay....And, yes it does help the younger plants to bale and remove the hay, it also helpsthe disc penetrate if you are going to disc before you plant a foodplot...especially if its a4-wheeler disc.
