Great photos MLO!
I wish there wasa site with multiple buck photos where the ages of the deer were known. A quiz of sorts. I would have guessed your firstbuck was 4 1/2, the second 2 1/2 and the last one, the one in front, as a high end yearling or low end 2 1/2 year old. He appears to be subordinate to the other buck unless he's taking a leak....I'm not quite sure which.
Great shots.
Thanks

I am quite sure they are all 3 1/2. One of them (the first and second picture on page one) was a six point last year at 2 1/2 that I saw many times, this year at 3 1/2 he is still a six point with a spread of about 16 or 17 inches. I could be wrongabout the age of the other two. I photograph and study deer all year long, I think I have the age right, mostly by body size and comparing to other deer. It's rare for a deer to reach the age of 4 1/2 around here in my area.

I'd agree w/you MLO - though it sometimes can be tough to tell 2.5 from 3.5 years. The last one looks 3.5 to me, dressed weight near 180lbs.
The others look to be 150-170lbs dressed weight and Could be 2.5 in a good year - but probably not this year in central NY - so I'd say 3.5 for them too.
4.5 in my are is almost unknown for my area too. Sad to say that 3.5 years is really really rare. All the bucks in you pictures are shooters for my group - and then some.
Thanks for sharing the pictures.

Farm hunter, they are all shooters for me also. we have very few 3 1/2 year old deer here too. I don't know what happened, I picked up the video camera instead of the gun. I remember thinking that it's so close to the end of hunting season maybe they will make it through and they will beextra nice next season.

you forgot the 3rd scenario...you own about 150 acres (as your 2nd case went), but can't be there 24/7 to control poachers and people who are on your land shooting all the deer that are on it.
seriously though, I think you're exactly right. After spending all spring/summer working the land it just seems like the only numbers to go up have been people trespassing and poaching deer. The best thing to do is put the food sources in the middle of your property, away from the threat of other hunters shooting your deer.

Poachers = an opportunity to zero in your rifle

one thing that i am going to start on my property is that it is going to be archery only for deer....so when rifle season starts...they havea safe haven to go to...and maybe like what they find and stay
