Theres a fella named Trout that wrote a book about this "finding wounded deer"
he has 30 years experience, worked in conjunction with medical and veterianary specialists to do his research. And he has tracked over 300 wounded deer.
he is very adamant that a paunch or gut shot deer CANNOT live more than 12-18 hours following the hit. something about the poisoning that occurs when the digestive area is breached. give it enough time to lay down, and you will find it nearby the next day, if you (or other predators) don't spook it off.
the book is out in my garage, i keep it in my daypack. it is the best written book on the subject i have read, i wish i read it 20 years ago. i highly recommend it.
he breaks down blood colors, consistencies, hair colors, textures, animal reactions, shot placement , etc... and there ARE a couple "bad hit spots" that require IMMEDIATE pursuit. most require waiting, but the bottom line is that different shots require different recovery methods.
it's a good read.

RE: worst mag. article i ever read!!!
I've read a lot of articles from Jim Zumbo, which I've found are interesting to read. I haven't read this one, just read what you've written, and I am baffled. Immediately chasing wounded game is a common sense "don't-do" fundamental. Even if there are a couple "bad shot" areas that require immediate attention, don't risk it. You could've hit somewhere other than where you think you hit. Unless you are 100% sure of the bad hit, you owe it to the animal to wait. I will hold Jim Zumbo much less credible after reading this type of an article. Blows my mind Jim would write an article with such bad advice. Anyone have his email address?

i'm not kidding, it will open up your eyes, you will learn some VERY interesting and USEFULL stuff. i think it should be required reading for all hunters.
if i had read it back when i started bowhunting, it would have saved me a TON of headaches!

Here's a link to the entire article from this month's Outdoor Life

By the way, this is certainly not the worst mag article I have ever read.

Man, I don't know what to think. Jim Zumbo is without a doubt one of the most experienced hunters on the planet but this article looks as if it was written by someone who just started hunting this year. First he said he hit a juice can and alerted the buck which was behind some brush but he THOUGHT his bullet had a clear path. If anyone actually believes this I have a bridge for sale. He saw the size of the rack...couldn't imagine it getting away...and shot through the brush pile hoping to make a clean hit which as evident from the article he didn't. Then he ran after the thing for three hours and eventually got it (9 times out of 10 this usually causes you to LOSE more deer than anything). Then he says that a deer left out over night in sub-freezing temps will spoil. Well, I might as well sell my freezer cause evidently all meat does in those things is rot.
Then he goes on to say that if there are alot of other hunters in the area start tracking immediately regardless of the chances. Basically, who cares the best way to track a wounded animal. Run it for 3 hours at the CHANCE you get it rather than another hunter ending the animals life quickly. We wouldn't want someone else putting an end to three hours of torture for a deer we screwed up on and shot the knee off of.
Don't get me wrong. I think Jim Zumbo has alot of experience and tons of wisdom to share with other hunters. I just think this article leaves alot to be desired.
Jim Zumbo
If the woods are full of other hunters, take your chances and follow quickly, or someone else might tag your animal.

Finding your deer asap because of the possibility of another hunter tagging it....I could see finding it in a hurry because Ive almost had it happen.
Finding your deer asap in woods that are empty of hunters........Thats Stupid.

This past year my buddy shot a deer down through the front and hit the liver, stomach, and on exit of the bullet castrated it. We left it over night and came back the next morning at first light and found it. Dang that thing stunk but we still found it within 50yrds of whare it was shot.
