welcome any suggestions or help that anyone could provide. The biggest animal that I'll hunt will be whitetail. I've been looking at The Remington 700 .243 and .270 calibers as well as the Winchester Model 70 .270. I just want an affordable gun that shoots good. I'll also be looking at buying a new scope... your suggestions and comments are welcome and appreciated.

If you want an inexpensive rifle for whitetail get a remington model 7 in 7mm/08 and never look back. The 7mm/08 is truely the perfect whitetail cartridge (that should start some arguments). If you want to spend a little more look at the remington 700 mountain rifle, light and handy, I shoot one in .270.
As far as inexpensive scopes I have had great luck with the bushnell trophy series 3x9s (around $100.00). I have been so impressed with the accuracy of these cheap scopes I even mounted one on my weatherby this year.
Good luck shopping.

Thanks.... I'll give that 7mm /08 a look. I guess the .243 is probably a bit too small. Thanks for the help.

If you want a good value in a rifle, check out the Savage line. Accurate, rugged and dependable at a fraction of the cost of the other brands.

The best advice anyone has ever given me was....

Go to a reputable shop. Look at, feel, hold, work the action, and shoulder as many different brands, actions, makes, and models as they sell. Repeat at a differnt shop with different brands and models. The one that you like the most is the one you should buy. Pick it in 270, 30-06, or 308 and you'll never look back.

If I had to buy and use only one deer rifle, It would be the Model 7 in 7mm-08.

Mild recoil, quick handling, good selection of amo and bullets. The .270 is an oddball cartridge in an unpopular bullet caliber.<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

Hunting is a right, treat it like a priviledge - respect nature

Hey phulochit, your name says it all in reference to the .270 remark (G).
Get the best quality scope you can afford with either rifle you choose.

How is the .270 an &quot;oddball cartridge and unpopular bullet caliber&quot; ? Personally I like a 30-06 better but there are not a whole lot of cartidges more popular than the .270.
