I just bought a remington 700 adl bolt .3006 and love it!
welcome any suggestions or help that anyone could provide. The biggest animal that I'll hunt will be whitetail. I've been looking at The Remington 700 .243 and .270 calibers as well as the Winchester Model 70 .270. I just want an affordable gun that shoots good. I'll also be looking at buying a new scope... your suggestions and comments are welcome and appreciated.

The Remington model 700 is a VERY nice gun. I love Remington. If money isn't a problem, you might want to consider looking at the Weatherbys. My friend got one last year and it too is a very very nice gun. .270 is a very nice cartridge. It is very very flat shooting. .243 has less kick and is pretty close in the flat trajectory. Another cartridge that you might want to look at is .25-06. That is the gun I started out with. It doesn't kick much and is really flat shooting.
Good Luck This Season: Buck Magnet
P.S. Only Chuck Adams can sit at home and see deer so get into the woods. =;^)

If I were buying a new rifle for deer sized game it would have to be a 7MM-08.
For deer it is just about as close to a perfect caliber that you could get!
As far as the gun itself, take your pick Winchester, Remington, and Savage all make good affordable guns! Personally I like the Winchesters.
And to top it off a Leupold 3X9X40 would be a good start! Good luck!

Just got done looking at the Rem Mod 7 SS and LSS (on the website) and that looks like a fine gun. The 7mm/08 looks like a great gun with a good size cartridge (140 grain). Thanks for the help. Now I just need to find a good store to buy one (the store in town is very very high).

i would stay away from the 243, its a little on the small side. i too have been looking at the 7mm-08, i wanted a 264 win mag but cant find one. i have also heard good things about the 260 remington for whitetail. but you cant go wrong with 270, 280, 308, or 30-06.

If money is a major concern you might want to consider a good used gun. If whitetail is the largest game you'll hunt, then perhaps downsizing the cartridge would be reasonable. Shooting an '06 can, under your limitations, be unnecessary in cost, weight and recoil. The .308 Winchester will do a more than adequate job. The 7mm-08 Rem. is also an excellent cartridge. If you're not limiting yourself to a bolt action, the Savage M-99 is a fine lever action rifle. It came in the .308 Win. and the .300 Savage. The .300 Sav. was about half way between the .30-30 Win. and the .308 Win. While it was a lever action, it was a strong action and did not use the tubular magazine. I'd suggest that you try to find one with a rotary magazine. This magazine was excellent and every round was in line with the chamber for feeding. This rifle has been discontinued but is not uncommon in good condition in gun stores, or even hock shops. Newspaper ads may also be a source. The last models of this rifle were equipped with a detachable box magazine. Personally I prefer the rotary magazine. I hope that this is of some help. Good luck.

I just bought a Winchester Model 70 .270 this past season, and I love it. Such a beautiful rifle.
I have the black shadow model. The gun is entirely done in a black matte finish, even the bolt action
