The .357 is very capable of taking deer at the ranges you mentioned. There was a couple of people shooting 41 mags after our Bullseye match last night. I'd never seen one before, lots of noise - and looking down the line it looked like lots of recoil. They were using 210 gr and 212 gr bullets.

buddy of mine took a buck with his 357 at 120 yards! believe it or not! he aimed about foot and a half over the back and hit it in the spine and dropped it in his tracks. he was shooting off a rest but hell of a shot. i carried my 357 this year and should have shot a doe at about 20 yards with it but chickened out and grabbed my rifle

I have a Ruger Redhawk in 41 Mag. Put some good wrap-around grips on it like Hogue or Pachmars and it disappates recoil pretty well. I shoot 210 Rem. semi-wadcutters in mine for practice and recoil is minimal. With all that said, I'm 6'5" and 280, but I think with handguns that doesn't make that much of a difference. 41 has more than enough power with the CorBon 250s or similar rounds to put down a whitetail up to 50 yards. You will notice more recoil from the hunting loads, obviously.
