ORIGINAL: BOWFANATIC Yeah , I'd call them criminals instead of poachers , but I still wouldn't poach personally . I hunt for pleasure and meat , not racks , but I don't need the meat . Even if I did I wouldn't poach . _____________________________ I've read replies from some of you folks on different threads that have said "if hunting was banned I'd be a poacher" But yet there's no excuse for poaching now?[&:] I also find it interesting how some folks post about their hatred for welfare and gov't handouts (tax payers money[:o]) over on the political forum but then refer to it as a better option over illegally killing a deer to feed your family.
If hunting were ever banned then I wouldn't be able to hunt legally and would therefore be a poacher if I did . Reference the quoted comment , it applies here too . I love hunting , but never will love it enough to go to jail for . It's just a frickin' hobby , not a way of life . BTW , I detest welfare and would eliminate it right now if I could . Nobody ever gave me anything because I never asked and wouldn't . If you live somewhere that has no work you don't need to poach , you need to move to where the jobs are . I've done some pretty crappy jobs to get by in the past , and jobs are out there , so there is no acceptable reason to poach . |

RE: Is Poaching Okay???
In the one case in maybe 100,000 it's ok to take a deer to feed your family. Wait I forgot the police will give them to you and you won't even have to shoot one.;)
|
RE: Is Poaching Okay???
Wait I forgot the police will give them to you and you won't even have to shoot one. First , you'll only get a roadkill if someone reports it and declines the deer , if it's not hamburger already. The police wont just see a deer on the side of the road and pick it up without knowing the time of death. The majority of time the person who reports it will claim it for themselves or someone they know. |
RE: Is Poaching Okay???
Luknikk's wife again. Just so you guys have a clue, assistance isn't that easy to get! I was a single mom with six kids and I was told I made a dollar too much to get assistance. So many nights I had to go to bed hungry so that the kids didn't. If I could have killed something and been able to skin it I would have. So NO I don't find it wrong to provide for your family if that needs to be done. A F***in DOLLAR! And THEY won't bend the system for that either.
I work a full time job , as a medical assistant, worked overtime while my folks kept the kids and worked part time at a bar.......NOW what? Bills barely being paid and food is little. Ex isn't paying and the state said he didn't have to until a judge said he did, over a year later. Life isn't all black and white. Thank God for me, Luknikk has a good job, we don't go hungry anymore and I can finish school for a better job than the one I had before....that paid a dollar to much for the system! RE: Is Poaching Okay???
Lets see, no job, and no money! If you live where you can hunt very near to home, it won't cost much gas, and bullets are reasonably cheap. I'll give you that one. But for me, I'd have to drive an hour and a half to hunt deer! Thats gas money to and fro, with no guarantee of meat for the effort.
Now, you go out your door to hunt. Maybe a little trespassing, You get caught! A fine for tresspassing, a fine for hunting without a licence, a fine for illegal game, restitution for illegal game. Add to that for sure confiscation of your gun, and other hunting equipment. Possibly a bail bondsman and bail to boot! Very cost effective! As others have said, maybe 1 in 100,000 cases would be justifiable! And please don't try to compare this to hunting being totally outlawed! I'd say that if we hunt legal, be good sportsmen, and guard our sport from poachers and anti-hunters, we will never have to worry about being poachers because of our sport being banned! |
RE: Is Poaching Okay???
Sometimes it may be by mistake. I mean a person could be in a management area where a spike has to be 5 inches. After he shoots the deer he finds out it was only 3 1/2 inches. I think it would be better to cut the deer up and take it home rather than leave a deer out there to rot. Very risky though.

I respect the man that kills to feed his family more than the man who pays 10 grand for a trophy to hang on the wall.
The first and formost law is this. Everything that lives and moves will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything."" (Genesis 9:1-3) |

I honestly hope your never faced with this problem! You wont be able to afford to move by the way. It sounds to me like your one of the "proud" folks I was refering to. When faced with a situation like that , one of your standards would have to change. I'm betting on venison on the table! I've already looked the dragon of nothingness in the eye and prevailed . On several occasions in my life I've been without for long periods , usually by choice , sometimes not . I have prevailed , and simultaneously sheltered others , for the simple reason that I refuse to lose . I would gladly dig ditches long before I would take assistance , and have , but neither I nor my family have ever missed a meal on my account . Maybe I'm just different ... I have never felt anything close to the need to take what was not mine , and never will , nor will I pretend to understand those who would rationalize crime . Call that what you will , but don't bother to ask me to apologize for saying it , you'll have a very long wait ahead of you . |

Just rob a bank. Any thing you say to justify a crime won't hold water. It's still a crime. There better and smater ways to deal with your needs. Ask for help, yes, swallow your pride. "Pride goeth before a fall."

RE: Is Poaching Okay???
i didnt realize that there was that many ignorant people who think they are so perfect. 1865 i agree there are times when u have to do whats needed. my childhood was similiar to yours when i was growing up in the 70`s. the state most of the time makes it hard for the working man while they cater to the lazy slobs who have never had a job. i make more than enough to pay my bills and feed my family, but i can also say i wouldnt hesitate to bust a deer if my situation was bad. screw the game laws, when my family is in need the laws take a back seat to the welfare of my kids. and i dont blame any man who feels the same way. so all u high and mighty "its poaching guys' GO AHEAD AND CAST THE FIRST STONE. BUT DONT CONDEMN A MAN TILL U HAVE WALKED A MILE IN HIS SHOES
|
RE: Is Poaching Okay???
yes, poaching is against the law. However last night i read a book by bill bynum where he was given three 22 shorts a day to hunt. in the event it is that bad again there will be no government assistance, and i will do what ever it takes to feed my family.:):)l

RE: Is Poaching Okay???
poaching is wrong regardless.....they make seasons for a reason....if there is no season in , then go fishing...............raise chickens/rabbits.....there is NO excuse for poaching, y'all can sit there and justify it all you want, but like someone else said , it's just a copout,an excuse, a poor one at that......there is no way i'd fill my freezer with meat that i had taken illegally, no way.......i'd eat earthworms first.......to sit there and try to rationalize this is unreal.....the ones that agree with me arent high and mighty at all, we just have respect for the game that we harvest and the laws.........like i said, there's always fishing.........yeah, you might have to drive or walk a ways to get to that water, but if i needed to feed my family , i would get there one way or another.....

Starving and poaching are two different things.

RE: Is Poaching Okay???
Charlie , if you waited strictly for the police to drop off road kills to feed your family you'd have to watch your kids cry in hunger. Especially in desolate places like northern Wisconsin. Basically what I'm saying is if it's really your last resort I'd have no problem with someone shooting a deer. As long as the people doing it don't have their frig backed with beer, enough money to buy cigs, a big screen TV a couple four wheelers in the yard. |
RE: Is Poaching Okay???
In this day and age I just don't understand how the "need to feed one's family" excuse can cut it anymore. There's a great deal of assistance out there, and donated meat and food. Would you guys also say it was alright for a man to rob someone so he could buy food? |

How many more of these big corn fed deer will it take to supplement the deer and all the other animals you can kill legally. I agree that theres a big difference in someone poaching to feed their family while having the same modern luxurys as most of (fridge stocked with beer) and someone who has nothing. I also agree there are far more poachers who poach for big racks or whatever thrill they get from it. I only know two families who truly need the food and I'm glad thats all I know because it is truly heart wrenching. |
RE: Is Poaching Okay???
You all are some crazy people.. You think our government is going to give the not so fortunate people money? No they will not.. they spend to much time worrying about other countries. Yes i said it and i know i'm going to catch a load of **** for it but you know what its true. You bet your ass they go and help people from OTHER countries with your tax money. Its not the countries money that they are using. Wow your going to ask why I say this. Hmnmm, maybe the fact that we are a billion dollars in debt. Bill Gates has more money than our country.. Dont think i'm lieing. You all are going to laugh when you read this and think its pretty damn funny because a 17 year old kid is telling you the truth. Think about it like this.. Suck it up so be it if someone poaches a deer or two every month or so... Deer get hit by cars every day. I think i heard it on the news that over 400 deer get hit by cars a week. wow whats wrong with hitting a deer with ur car? the rich people get the deer and the poor people get ****.. less food to eat.. Call me old dumb ignorant or any other name callin words you have..its the truth though people can hit deer with there automobiles and not get in any damn trouble.. wow they have to spend about 1000+dollars to fix there car.. its not going to hurt to kill 1-2 deer. I'm out.. take it as you may

Best answer I have read. I know of some very poor people, and none of them poach. On the other hand, most poachers today DO NOT poach to feed their families. They do it because they don't follow the laws, they want to hunt whereever they want without permission, and many are just after a rack. poaching is wrong regardless.....they make seasons for a reason....if there is no season in , then go fishing...............raise chickens/rabbits.....there is NO excuse for poaching, y'all can sit there and justify it all you want, but like someone else said , it's just a copout,an excuse, a poor one at that......there is no way i'd fill my freezer with meat that i had taken illegally, no way.......i'd eat earthworms first.......to sit there and try to rationalize this is unreal.....the ones that agree with me arent high and mighty at all, we just have respect for the game that we harvest and the laws.........like i said, there's always fishing.........yeah, you might have to drive or walk a ways to get to that water, but if i needed to feed my family , i would get there one way or another..... its not going to hurt to kill 1-2 deer |
RE: Is Poaching Okay???
Sorry my first post on this topic wasn't on topic.. I'm just sick of everyone dealing with the tsunami and not worrying about the people we have hear that are dealing with the same consequences.. but thats another subject.
So what makes it right to live off of chickens and cows? Theres not a season for them yet we can kill them and eat them any time we want? Sorry but i def. Disagree with what you people are saying. Why is it ok to go and kill and animal that you have raised and then kill it. People go to jail all the time for shooting cats and dogs but yet its alright to go kill another pet of yours. Wait its different right? Your just trying to earn some money so you can have a good life. Well the people who are killing and extra deer or twos just trying to live. Dont give me none of that BS that the cows are made to be killed and get food off of. Whats the deer here for? The same reason. So are you telling me if I build a 20 ft fence over a 100 acre plot i'm entitled to kill the deer that I put in them cause they are mine? Works both ways before long people are going to be have deer farms every half mile so they just have to walk out and bam shoot ya a deer and have dinner. Tell me if I'm way off topic but i dont think i am. Its just a matter of opinions.. |

RE: Is Poaching Okay???
Alright, so if i call my son when i have one its perfectly legal? Cause i own them.. thats all bs and your killing them for the same reason. FOR FOOD.. i could see if ur killing them to make money... your not you killing them to feed ur hungy self and ur kids. So all in all we have different opinions. I would never poach a deer, its not who i am.. but trust me.. if the going got tuff i think i would consider it.. just depends how bad i got..
but for real.. .hows it killing a chicken and a cow different? i think i'd get in trouble if i did have a fence up and was killing deer. you know how them damn wildlife officers are.. specially the ones in ohio |
RE: Is Poaching Okay???
My point is that it is legal to kill cows and chickens for food. Shooting a deer for food is o.k., too. Just don't break the law doing it (i.e. poaching).
|
RE: Is Poaching Okay???
I told myself to stay out of this one, but I can't stand it anymore. I can agree with both sides of this debate on certain subjects, but for those of you that say "you'd never poach", just how many of you have been in the situation where you had to make a decision whether to provide for your families by killing a deer out of season or break the law? Its just a guess, but I'd say very few, if any. If you've not been in that situation, you can't possibly give a true answer. I know I can't. And for those of you that compared poaching to selling drugs? If you're selling drugs, you're ruining someone's life, but I don't ever recall a deer being poached having the same effect. For the record, I'm a firm believer in prosecuting poachers that are doing it just for the racks etc, but if it comes down to my family starving or me taking a deer out of season, you can bet I'll do my duty, as a provider, to do what I can to keep food on the table. just my .02

RE: Is Poaching Okay???
So are you telling me if I build a 20 ft fence over a 100 acre plot i'm entitled to kill the deer that I put in them cause they are mine? Exactly. The state typically owns the wildlife. You buy a deer and put him in a pen, he's yours. Shoot him if you want cause you own him. here it's illegal to hunt them whether you own them or not if it isn't deer season . The Bellar Lacey Act violations case held here recently is a good example , the guy thought that he could sell penned killing anytime he wanted because he "owned" the deer . He can't even renew his deer breeding license anymore because he copped to game violations over this very subject . Last I looked his herd was for sale . |
RE: Is Poaching Okay???
is poaching ok?no but true survival no question about it.In 1995 I had my right leg crushed under a backhoe. The comp system destroyed me financially. No govt assistance because even though I couldnt work I still had a job in their wacked eyes.My employers ins. company would cancel my benifits every 4-5 months and I would have to take them to court to get them reinstated.Did I poach? No I got by 3 years of only being paid for 1year and 9 months by selling everything possible, friends giving me fish, veggies and meat.Isaw family members get govt. assistance when they were healthy but lazy.To those in the get a job crowd,if I did then I would have had to pay back all the medical they covered.I tried the system and it just doesnt work.At the time I had wife and 1 daughter. My first post sorry for misspellings and going onjust wanted to share my exp. I see everyones sides and really enjoy you guys and gals insights.Last note the accident happened 6 days before the start of 95 bow season.

RE: Is Poaching Okay???
Hey Duece,
Farm animals are not, and never were considered pets! Yes, there are a few people that have farm animals as pets, but most fam animals are raised for meat, eggs, or fur! There is a huge difference between eating a farm animal and the family pet! Also, if you had land, with a 20ft. fence around it, I'm sure no one would consider you to be poor enough to justify poaching! BTW, here in Texas, you can have a 30ft. high fence if you want to, but you still can't shoot the Whitetail deer, or other native game species out of season! Also, you people that are going on about poaching being justifyable, you can keep saying it over and over, but it still will not make it right! Poaching is stealing, and if you poach you will steal other things too! If you can't kill enough game animals "in season," enough other non-game animals, and fish, the rest of the year to feed your family, then you probably need to become a vegetarian, because your going to starve anyway! Sorry JagMagMan, but there will be NO name calling or personal acusations in here. Have your debate, that is fine. |
