RE: Scared of the dark?
i coon hunted when i was 7...and alot of the time my dad didnt like to have hte lights on for some reason...ive seen spiders so big you could see their eyes reflecting way in the tree tops!...ive had grouse kick out while walking a loggin road without lights on(scared the living s*** outa me i about died!)...theres really not much around here that can hurt you...i really am not afraid of the dark...im in the area i turkey hunt atleast 30 mins before the first gobble which is like 20 mins before sunrise usually...plus a 40 min walk in in the pitch black no lights at all! after you think about it sure there are yotes and bears and foxes and giant spiders...but none of which will actually hunt you down to kill you...you shouldnt be too afraid of the dark...its all in your mind..if you didnt think o my what was that noise? what made that branch fall? and everything else that races through your mind when its dark in the woods everyone would be fine...but then i couldnt hunt deer how i do if everyone was on their stands well before light!...

RE: Scared of the dark?
You damn straight I'm cautious ( not scared ) going to and from my stand when its dark because the things around here wanna eat'cha. I follow a trail of bright eyes two miles up the mountain and am sitting in my stand at least one hour before sunrise and walking upon fresh bear crap is not very asureing. You just do what it takes to get to the game you want to persue, and be as prepared as you can be assiociated with risks you may encounter, good luck, Bobby

RE: Scared of the dark?
Nothing around here to eat you so im not scairt but like the others i have had soem grouse jump and some deer that will get your heart racin, lol then you start hearin things, i feel alot safer in my stand though that wqay if somebody does happen to shoot me the police will know it wasnt an accident, lol i only use a flashlight during rifle season incase i walk past somebody or they walk past me to let them know im there, during bow i just get my night vision adjusted and go,

RE: Scared of the dark?
The biggest thrill I have have ever had, in the woods, made my hair stand up, and caused my pace to quicken considerably. It was dark, dark one night during last years gun season. I was walking out through a cut corn field. All was quiet, not even a breeze, I am NOT afraid of the dark. I work the night shift, I spend a good share of my time patrolling in the dark, so I have gotten very used to it. Anyhow, all of a sudden this coyote starts to howl, he sounded like he was about 3 feet from me. My reaction was involuntary. Even though I have no fear of the dark, or anything in the NY woods, My pulse rate went up, and I double timed it out of there.
Incidently, My uncle was waiting for me at the other side of the field, and he 'till this day hasn't let me live that down. He STILL tells everybody that will listen about my 2 steppin' through the corn field. Point is Jeff, don't feel bad. Everybody gets spooked sometimes. It's all part of the fun. I'll take good luck over skill any day! |
RE: Scared of the dark?
The last post was too long, but I wanted to get this in too.
My nephew, 25 years old, up until last year, refused to go to his stand in the dark in the morning or come out after dark in the PM. Then last year he went in early, and came out late. BUT, when he did: In one hand was a Million CP spotlight, (rechargable type), LIT. In the other hand was a 6 D-Cell Mag-Light, LIT. And on his head was a coalminers type headlamp, LIT. Those lights stayed on, even after he was in his stand, until the sun came up. Don't you think we can see HIM coming.<G> I think he spent as much on batteries last year as I spent on my new rifle. I'll take good luck over skill any day! |
RE: Scared of the dark?
My senses are certainly working on all eight cylinders (except my vision) when I'm heading to my stand. When bow hunting, I always carry my .40 cal incase I really needed to defend my self against something. I alway bring a flash light but only use it if I feel I'm getting off track.

RE: Scared of the dark?
lol i forgot until i read the one bout the coyote, the first time i ever went bowhunting i went on a evening hunt, me and dad split up at the truck and was gonna hunt across the hollow from one another except i was hunting off the ground, i was kinda jittery been 12 and didnt know the land real well but i told him i could do it so i was off, well about edge of dark teh fire whistle at the local station went off and i jumped but figured out what it was and hunted till dark, he was at the truck when i got there and said i figured youd be in teh truck when i got here, after all them coyotes where howling around you did you seen any of em sounded like they was about right on you? me knees got weak and i about passed out lol they had been howling to the fire whistle and i didnt hear them i guess, i sure am glad i didnt
