I try to pop the pelvis (it was the way I was taught). Doe are much easier that bucks. I use my knife (very carefully). I also cut around the anus to help removing the inards or if I can't get through the bone. I don't carry a thin knife, so cutting around the anus is a bit difficult. I think I am going to try the saw approach this year (I have a dual blade knife/saw).

It's easy, just insert your long blade knife on the outside of the anus and follow it around with your blade(you can put your finger in to help, wear a rubber glove)your knife will follow right around the pelvic cavity everyone else is spliting. If you are taking an animal out whole I suggest this method,if you are quartering in the feild then split the pelic bone.

I agree with others...forget about it! I cut around the anus and tie it off with a string I keep in my day pack. Then you can just pull it out. Same for bladder...string and keep it, bottle it, keep it in refrigerator then use it as a lure or mock scrape...

I use a 4" filet knife, go around the anus tie it off with string, and pull it back through. I go around the anus cavity as far as the knife reaches and it seems to cut everything loose. Then you can split the bone or leave it intact.

Either way is fine. I personally split the pelvic bone with either a sagen or wyoming saw, it is just as fast and easy to me (also I believe it should be done for proper cooling so might as well do it on the spot!)
