Default number of points

When counting the number of points a buck is do you count the kickers. I had a small buck walk by my stand. It had 2 points on one of the main beams the other beam it had 3 points also it had 2 kickers. Would this be a 5 pointer or 7.

I would count each point. If it has "stickers" or "kickers" off of other points I would count them as points also. I was always taught that if you can hang a ring on it then it's a point. It's really up to you in how you want to count him. If he's got eight points (four on each side) and then he's got stickers or kickers, I call him a mainframe 8 with however many kickers or stickers he had. Thats just my opinion.

Thats seems to be a good call with the ring thing. My Taxidermist says it has to be a half inch to call it a point. just what I was told.

1" for the point to count. most people go by if you can hang a ring on it. i usually say if its a mainframe 8 or a mainframe 4X4 with a sticker on his right G-2 or whatever....a 15 pointer sounds kinda weird to me. maybe i've been watching too much monster bucks and NAWTV

Here we would call the buck you saw a 2x3 with kickers. Often when talking with hunters the rt side/lt side and score is given ie: 5 x 5 150 to describe the deer.

The B&C rule is points that measure min. of 1" are a point.

As skeeter stated,in my area we would describe the deer as a 2x3.Larger antlered bucks are described with a rough B&C score as well.We try to describe a set of antlers accurately and not to count every point and little kicker to make the antlers sound larger as many people tend to do..
