I use a Marlin 35 when I rifle hunt. I like to hunt thicker areas and the 35 seems to be able to keep its course even after nipping a branch here and there! Plus I just love the whay that gun feels. It fits me very well.... Welcome to the board and good luck hunting!

Since deer season is fast upon us, I would stay with the familiar model for this year. You want something you are used to when that big one is staring at you. This 'offseason' you can get you a gun you like to shoot and have time to get acclimated. A .270 is pretty universal and can handle most terrains.

Welcome to the board. Lot of different personal preferences on this, but a bolt actiton .270 topped with a quality scope will be hard to beat for all around deer hunting.

i have a 30-06, .270 savage, .300 savage, and a marlin 30-30 (that is out of commission right now) and to be honost with you, i've taken more deer with that darned ole 30-30 than any of the other guns combined. I must admit that the 30-30 is my first choice. But then again, it depends on what type of terrain you are hunting in. open fields, brush, woods??? i hunt the mountains where is thick brush and and woods. in my oppionion that is the best gun for my kind of hunting because i usually don't get a shot at more than 75 yards away.

the 7mm08,270,280,308 and 30-06 are all great rounds for close up and farther shots. but the 243,257rob.,25-06,260 and others are also great guns.
i would look into a gun that fits you well and chose a caliber you like the best.
if i where looking for a deer rifle right now this is what i would look into
1.remington model. 7 SS or 700 mountain rifle or ADL. great guns for the money
2.savage makes a good gun for the money but they are ugly but they shoot better then most $1,000 guns.
3. remington 7600. great guns. but like i said earlier look for a gun that fits YOU well then look into what caliber

While 300 mag is larger than required it certainly will do a good job.Since you already have one you don't need another rifle. If however you want another rifle the 25-06 is a great deer/coyote rifle.

try a 30-30 lever action, my dad uses one and i have shot it before. it really doesnt have a whole lot of recoil and it is effective at some great ranges.....

jatucker` It realy depends on where you live.
If you live where the woods are thick vegation like in,
NC where I live a 30-30 or a 35 rem would do good.
But if you live in the west like Texas or Wy you might have a long shot then a,
300 mag or 7 mm mag would be good.
So let where you live determine what gun you use OK.
Good Luck
