Like Taz, I agree with smokepole. Every deer I've ever taken with a gun went down where I could see it. I give it a few minutes and still approach cautiously. You should approach from the rear. A good trick is to touch the eye with a stick.
When bowhunting, my rule is 30 minutes or longer. I usually sit on stand for 30, then climb down and stow my gear (climbing stand, etc.) before taking up the blood trail. I've made exceptions to this when I was sure of a kill shot and it was raining.
