RE: hey everyone i am looking for a new rifle

considering the recoil will probably knock you into next-week

is it that bad? i have shot 300 rum's and not noticed the recoil before.....but i would have to think that the 7mmstw would be going to fast for close range shots right??

There are lots of good rifles in that price range. Are you looking for something new? You could just about pick up two nice used Remingtons for $700.

RE: hey everyone i am looking for a new rifle

here let me explain a little more and hopefully a lot better and easier to understand

i have saved up my money "$700" and i am looking to buy a new deer rifle. my dad said he would buy me a scope if i got the gun. i would like to get it soon so by deer season i should be used to the rifle. my shots will be anywhere from 200 yards in. most will be under 75 or so. i want a nice light rifle that is easy to carry. under 7 1/2 pounds. i have no clue what caliber i would like either. i have a 243,270 that i use for deer and my dad uses a 300 savage. i would like the caliber to be large enough to use for black bears that weight around 300-400 pounds. i don't think recoil will be much of a factor because i have shot large bore rifles and they don;t bother me yet if it dose i could put a new recoil pad on it or something to that effect.

here are the guns that i have shot and liked: in order
sako
remington
winchester "this is what my 243 is yet it is a pre64 so i don't know about the new ones"
ruger
CZ
savage

any more questions i will try to answer

any comments are will be great thanks for your help

Do you own or borrow the .243 & .270? If they are basically yours, then I would look for a move up, since you said a RUM wasn't that bad the 300 would be my suggestion. The 270 is plenty capable of handling Deer and Blackie's but since you want another why buy similar vary the lot some, the 300 or even a .284(280 rem, 7 remmag, 7mm STW) would be a decent add on.

Now if you don't own either and looking for a bear and deer gun, I would suggest the .270, .280, 7mm-08, .308 or 7mm rem mag. All these would allow you to grain up or down dependant on the game and will serve you excellent for your requirements. Also all would be ok for bigger stuff like elk or moose, albeit the .270, 7mm-08 would have some minor short falls in ammo choice/selection dependant on the game/terrain you maybe hunting these tougher skinned critters. BTW I own a .270 that put down more Moose and Elk then my 300 wby. ever has, so yes they will work just fine if one employs the proper bullet and shot selection. Now I use a 7 rem mag for all my rifle hunting needs and it doesn't sneeze at anything I have asked of it, flat, fast and packs a pretty good UMF!

As far as rifles it is all individual taste, feel and features that make up the decision. My 7 rem mag is a custom 700 BDL & 270 Browning A bolt SS Stalker both are wonderful guns. I would suggest you look at Browning and Tikka as well before making your decision, not that I don't like rems but I think it is important to comperative shop so your 100% sure you bought the best fit for you personally. Also don't shy from Winchester Model 70 if you like the Floor Plate Hinge, personally I am a DM man. Whatever you decide don't spend all your money on gun with none left for a good scope and top quality rings and bases to mount it on (I have seen way to many guys say my budget is X dollars and use it mostly up on the rifle thinking that is where the difference really lies...just a warning)!

RE: hey everyone i am looking for a new rifle

thanks the 243 and 270 are mine. my dad is going to put a leupold scope on it prob. a 3-9x40 varx 2 like on my 243. i don't like the way tikka's feal.[:'(] my prob. with the magnum calibers is that most of there rifles wear a 26 inch barrel and i will be doing some of my hunting in mountail lural and swamps were the extra barrel would be trouble some.

so an ideal gun would be a bolt action with floor plate and a 20-22 inch barrel. thats why i kinda like the model 7ss.

also i know that the 30-06 is a good gun yet i don't want one because that what all the people around my area use and i don't like doing what everyone else is....it would be too easy LOL.

i do not use my 270 because it is a savage 111 and it sucks!! i can put great groups up yet i don't like the feal or ballance or sloppy bolt [:'(] i really like the remington safty and there bolts so thats why i am looking there way

I'd keep the .270 and put a dang good scope on it. All you will need.

RE: hey everyone i am looking for a new rifle

I know you said rem but maybe you should take a look at an abolt as well, you can go with SS Stalker or Blued chambered in a .280rem (22") or if you fancy the WSM's -270, 300 or 7mm (23"). Now I really do like my rems as well but I dare you to find a Rem bolt that is smooth as the browning in a stock off the shelf rifle, plus the 60o bolt is a very nice feature to boot. The 280 rem would be something not everyone has, allows you selection of above 150grs for bigger critters and them nasty large bears you refer to & at the same time out preforming the 06' - so you'd be one uping them sort to speak. Personally I have seen what a 280 will do on the likes of deer, bear, moose and elk as my main hunting partner shoots Gold Medallion in 280, simply is a fine non magnum round for those critters.

The 308 win would also be a consideration, I started hunting with this cartridge at the age of 12 and will own one till the day I die. Not fancy but extremely accurate, small package that works will chuck a nice 165 gr of lead at moderate speeds to stop either of the game you intend to hunt. While many do use it for elk or moose, similar to a 270 it needs to have proper bullet selection, placement and limitations assigned to it when hunting bigger animals.

RE: hey everyone i am looking for a new rifle

The .260 is a great cartridge, same family as the .243. A medium short round that flys well. But it may be a little lite for elk and bear it is a great Deer round. I picked up a Rem Model 7 in .260 for my boys and I have taken it to the stand over my .270 a few times now. Need to look around a bit for the rounds though.

RE: hey everyone i am looking for a new rifle

If your really set on getting a new gun and you like the remingtons, why not give the 30-06 a serious look.I know everyone else uses them but that why they are so good.It will cover anything you want it to do,from small varmints to large game with a switch of a bullet.Good for short range and long range as well.
Also what skeeter said the 280 would also be an excellent choice, based on the 06 cartridge.:)
