Default .44 Mag. For Deer Hunting

Was just curious as to how many have experience with a .44 mag. deer hunting.

I have a Marlin guide gun and a Ruger Blackhawk hunter in .44 mag.

I know the .44 is effective.

I just wanted your thoughts on max. ranges...bullet recommendations...experiences....etc.

I shot a buck with a lever action Marlin 44 Mag last season. I took him through the lungs with one shot. It was a 240 grain handload..forget the exact load...Sierra bullet. He didn't go far. I like the 44 carbine. It is light and handy and balances well as I carry it in my hand. Recoil is minimal. I would use it out to 100 yards..and that is a long way in the woods!

I've taken a few deer now with my 44 mag. They have been close, but I wouldn't hesitate to take a 100 yds shot. I use 240 gr XTP's. I like using a small fast handling rifle like the marlin levers.

I've taken 2 does with out .44 S&W pistol in the past 6 years. It worked great. Both deer dropped on the spot, no tracking involved.

I have taken three deer with the 44 Mag. One Mule Deer buck at about 60 yards with the 14 inch Contender barrel. One at about the same distance(Muley Doe) 5 inch S&W classic. One other Mule deer doe at about 100 tards with the 21 inch Contender Carbine Barrel. All were shot with 300 grain Hornady XTP's and all dropped in thier tracks. Out to 125 yards I would not hesitate to shoot at a deer with any 44 magnum Rifle. I use nothing for deer with the 44 Mag than the 300 grain XTP. Deadly!!!!!
