Spring Deer Sightings
#1
I have seen more deer this spring turkey hunting than I did during deer season. It's good to know that our heard is healthy and alot made the winter. I saw 4 yesterday and 2 today. Today, they walked right up to about 15 yards from me. It made my day. No turkey though!

I have seen a few more (southern NH) deer this year than last year this time. Last deer season I saw more turkeys than deer. So that means when I go turkey hunting this Sat morning, I'll probably see a lotta deer....Of course I would love to see and shoot a turkey this Spring, but seeing deer, no matter what time of year, is always a special treat.

I saw ALOT of deer turkey hunting. I saw at least 3 groups of 10 or more. I saw a group of 3 bucks. The knobs on the head were about 4-6 inches tall and on one of them was really big around.

I'm seeing deer everywhere this spring. 7 in the field couple days ago, while I was clearing a ditch with the backhoe. They got a drink from a wet spring 50yds. away and moseyed into the timber. Going out for coffee the other AM. the wife and I counted 12 in the field near the house. Figure they were all does. Enjoy them now, as we won't see them this fall. LOL

As I have said before - I hunt the urban fringes. In my area the farm that was huntable was sold this last year. The construction company has set up and is ready to go. The herd (about 70 in various groups) have all but diappeared from their old routes. Since they were traveling from one section of state park to another across private lands, I'm sure they just changed routes but I haven't discovered it yet. What this means is that they will now become suburbanite pests, with no chance to hunt them, as the land around is small plots with houses on them. Only one section of the state park is huntable and they avoid it like the plague. It really urkes me that states haven't taken the opportunity to force hunting/herd management on the land owners. There's a simple solution: the state DNR sets up a fund from everyone who wishes to post no hunting signs - the signs can only be bougth from DNR at a set fee per acre. If on the other hand you wish to allow hunting you get a posting from the DNR that says apply at ..(the land owners name, address, etc).. to hunt and the DNR PAYS the land owner a certain amount to post this sign. This does several things - it opens up more hunting areas, it creates revenue for DNR to use to manage the herds better, and it creates a central data base for areas that are not huntable so eveyone knows that this is poaching and can be used in court against those who do. Hmmm... what do you guys think?

Ya for sure there are plenty of deer out and about these days. On our one field 215 acres south of the farm there are 20-30 deer that walk across it each night ot get at our alfalfa land. If i get off my butt i will get out there with the video camera one of these nights. Seems to be lots of the critters and they are lookin pretty healthy. I haven't seen any antlers yet but shouldn't be too long yet.

I saw 4 mule deer bucks the other day. 1 already is a 4x4 and about 18" wide and longer than his ears. By this season he will be a good buck. the others will be a spike, forkhorn and a three point.
