RE: Spring Deer Sightings
As I have said before - I hunt the urban fringes. In my area the farm that was huntable was sold this last year. The construction company has set up and is ready to go. The herd (about 70 in various groups) have all but diappeared from their old routes. Since they were traveling from one section of state park to another across private lands, I'm sure they just changed routes but I haven't discovered it yet. What this means is that they will now become suburbanite pests, with no chance to hunt them, as the land around is small plots with houses on them. Only one section of the state park is huntable and they avoid it like the plague. It really urkes me that states haven't taken the opportunity to force hunting/herd management on the land owners. There's a simple solution: the state DNR sets up a fund from everyone who wishes to post no hunting signs - the signs can only be bougth from DNR at a set fee per acre. If on the other hand you wish to allow hunting you get a posting from the DNR that says apply at ..(the land owners name, address, etc).. to hunt and the DNR PAYS the land owner a certain amount to post this sign. This does several things - it opens up more hunting areas, it creates revenue for DNR to use to manage the herds better, and it creates a central data base for areas that are not huntable so eveyone knows that this is poaching and can be used in court against those who do. Hmmm... what do you guys think?
