what caliber do you use

Just wondering what your favorite deer cartridge is? mine has got to be the 7mm-08 plenty strong enough to put down the big boys but also gentle enough for the smaller ones. Also what is your average distance hear in maine its around 35 - 40 yards

RE: what caliber do you use

I use a 300 win mag.

Here in western Alabama the shots can be pretty short in our thick ceders and pines. When hunting the woods my average shot is around 40 yards while when I hunt our massive fields and pasture land my average is probably 250 yards.

I use two guns during the season, a model-94 .30-30 and a model 700 in 7mm mag. The 7mm only comes out when i hunt an area that has shots out to 250-300 yards.

30-30, and 7mm rem mag

I prefer the .30-06; distances can be from 25-200 yards in the various spots I have.

Reflex Excursion Compound Bow, with Carbon Impact 6500 arrows, and rocket broadheads. All the caliber you need for a good challange.

7mm-08. The perfect deer cartridge IMHO. My shots range from 30 to 200 yards where we hunt.

either a 243 win or a 25-06 would be the calibers I use for deer.

RE: what caliber do you use

Right now my two deer guns are the .308 and 7MM RM. For my hunting either could be considered overkill, because my average shots are under 100 yards. I used a 6MM for years, and would not hesitate to use it on just about any whitetail deer, anywhere! So really anything from the .243 on up will be good for deer, so it's just whatever your preference is. If I were going out to buy a "whitetail" only gun, it would be the .260 or 7MM-08!

RE: what caliber do you use

Up until this year I have used the 30/06 and the 30/30, depending on where I'm hunting. Next yr I'll be using the 270 I think. I have not yet used a 270 hunting , but if it performs well I'll be using it instead of my 06. I hunt in Mississippi , in terrain from small rolling hills with hardwood bottoms to the river swamp bottoms. Generally my kills are in the 25 - 100 yds.

I live in an area where we hunt both deer and elk and shots can be on the long side. My weapon of choice is a 7mm Rem Mag in a Win Mod 70.

270 or if it is going to be extra windy or I'm in Kansas where the bruisers are I take my 300 Ultra Mag.

30-30 and 30-06. 30-30 is my favorite though. I don't have many shots over 100 or so yards.

RE: what caliber do you use

A lot of great ones to choose from, for deer only the 270 win or 2506 would still have to be high on my list but that being said I have moved to a 7 rem mag and haven't thought twice about it;)

I say the one that gives you the most confidence is probably the best choice.

I almost always bowhunt but I have a .30/30, a .300 Win Mag, a .260 Remington and a .223 Remington. I would have to say my favorite would be the .260.

Hmm,

I don't pursue deer anymore; however, when I left off, my favorite set up was a long barreled 338WinMag with a Leupold 2-7. Range varied from 25 feet to 300 yards with 150 yards being common.

This was my favorite rifle for hunting anything and everything at the time, regardless of size. It seemed when I "pulled down" on my quarry and fired it died immediately and that was it. This was before I diversified my rack of rifles a bit and the 338WinMag just kind of crowded my .270 out of the picture, even for antelope. Kind of fun recollecting all the good old "bambi popping" days --- thanks!

Good Luck and Good Hunting,
EKM
