RE: sheds anyone????
I posted in the Northeast regional forum, but I'll post here too, I got so lucky I can't contain myself!! This last sunday my 8 year old daughter and I went for a walk near the house trying to located sheds in areas that I've found them by accident before. It usually goes that when I'm looking for sheds I can never find them, but when I'm scouting or turkey hunting I find them by accident. Well that changed this last weekend!
We found 3 sheds from 3 different bucks within a fifty yard radius, and found them all within a 10 minute time period, talk about shocked. It appearred the deer have been hanging around this particular area becuase it has a good amount of acorns and beechnuts on the ground, the winter here has been tougher and colder than usual. Two of the sheds were 4 points each, and the other one was a 3 point. I'm looking forward to hunting these bad boys in the fall, it's good to know that two decent bucks made it through the season. We'll be going back again after this snow melts from the recent storm and try to locate the other sides. I'll be sure to bring my little girl with again, she's pretty good luck!! |
RE: sheds anyone????
The weather and amount of snow has made it tough to get around in certain areas. Couple that with some deer are still hanging onto them, still managed to find over a dozen, mostly dinks but have a 150 class matcher set and my best a nontypical that scores 94"..so I am pleased[8D]

RE: sheds anyone????
Schuykill I'm over near Pittsburg and I've been out a few times shed hunting this year.To date I've only found 1 shed but I have seen hundreds of deer in the last 2 weeks and not a single deer had horns. So they are deffinetly dropping here I plan to be out looking hard on sat and sun.

RE: sheds anyone????
Thanks for the info shedman6o That gives me something to look forward too. Its no fun looking if they didnt drop them yet [:'(]

RE: sheds anyone????
picked up 15 so far this year until the big snow fall hit. It will be end of april before the snow is gone so i can get out lookin again.....no huge sheds yet so far bigest set this year was around a 150 deer and lots of small 4 pointers and such. Hopefully when the snow leaves i can get out there and find a pile.
|
RE: sheds anyone????
found one with 3 points on it. and of course the eight point skull. i have a pretty big collection and am proud of it. i am gonna look hard tommoro

RE: sheds anyone????
Found another shed sunday, it was the other side of one of the halves I found last weekend. Found it within the same 50 yard circle that I found the other 3, pretty amazing that I was able to locate them within that close range of an area.
I'll be looking some more as the snow slowly melts, I think I've found a new hobby in the post-season besides just scouting. I've never really gotten serious about finding sheds but after this year I think I'll be looking a little bit harder. |
RE: sheds anyone????
Found another one on Thursday, a big fat palmated rack, not long tines but pretty neat looking, here's a photo

RE: sheds anyone????
Last but not least, here are four of the five sheds I've found in the last 3 weeks, the fifth is sitting on my desk at work.
I'm like a kid on christmas day finding these things, I've never had this much luck finding them, I'll be going out again this weekend. ![]() |
RE: sheds anyone????
Phil, where about in N.E. are you. just curious. I live in the N.H. seacoast aera and have yet to find any. Maybe with last weekends rain the snow will have melted enough to find some bones.

RE: sheds anyone????
I took my father in law shed hunting with me sat.It was his 3rd trip with me in 2 years.I walked his butt off.He was in the middle of some thick stuff when I stumbled on what is possibly the best shed I've ever found in P.a. Knowing that bigger bucks will knock 1 antler off after the other has been shed I told him we needed to start circling around the spot where I found the shed.We did that but with no luck.So we continued walking trails until low and behold my father in law found the other side(it was his 1st shed ever)as it turns out the 1 I found was the antler that was knocked off and his was naturally shed.Even though it was the best P.a shed I have found to date I gave mine to him .Now hopefully he will want to go more often. That makes 5 for the season with march coming up.Here we go!!!!!

RE: sheds anyone????
Adams I'm in Southeast Mass., the snow has been melted here for about 3 weeks now due to the rain.
Didn't find anything this weekend, will still be looking throughout March though for more, already have picked out a couple more stand sights for the fall! |
RE: sheds anyone????
I have approximately 4,732.75 miles on my feet with no sheds yet!![:@]

RE: sheds anyone????
I told you to stop looking up in the trees for them. Pretend your looking for a golf ball.
|
RE: sheds anyone????
None yet here in Bama. Hopefully I will find a few in turkey season.
|
RE: sheds anyone????
When out again this weekend and it looks as though a buck has been ripping up my honey hole since the end of extended bow season(Dec. 13th). I had 3 resident doe that hung around all last year and It looks by the rubs and scrapes like the buck had hung out for quite a while while spreading his genes. Unfortunately he didn't leave and bones for me to collect.

RE: sheds anyone????
Tyler has found 14 and I have found 13. Snow has slowed us down up here as most bucks have dropped in my area. We need some warm weather and not the 5 inches of fresh snow we got today. Should be a great year if the snow ever melts. Here are most of them...

RE: sheds anyone????
Tim- that's very impressive! I wish I had 1/13 the "luck" you've had so far! Nice job! :)
|
RE: sheds anyone????
WOW TJF that is sweet. I just want to find one of those.
|
RE: sheds anyone????
TJF - nice! Very impressive.
I suck at finding sheds. Went out once this year but no luck. Too much snow. We've had warm weather and rain so snow is almost gone - will be going out this weekend with my boy. Any secrets? Stay on the trails or just look your tail off? |
RE: sheds anyone????
I guess that's the secret Badshot. I suck at finding them too. This year I'm on a mission though. I talked to Kobear who seems very adept at finding them. He says to walk and walk and walk and walk etc....... Go slow and concentrate on bedding areas and thickets. Of course he's 17 years old.[:-]

RE: sheds anyone????
Best advice I can give is to gain access to as much land as you can, also walk, walk and walk some more and spend time doing it. That is the key to finding sheds. Deer herd up and move around during the winter here. What was a great shed hunting area last year might be a poor one this year on account of it. The more land you have access to the better off your are.
We key in on the basics of searching "winter" feeding areas, trails, bedding areas and staging areas by bedding areas. Forget where the deer were last fall from hunting, you need to know where they are spending their time in the winter. That is important to us as the deer herd up and move to different food sources then what was available last fall as those areas get used up or are buried by deep snow here. In areas with deep snow, we run ridge lines or hilltops. The deer are using the path/trail of least resistance when going inbetween bedding and feeding areas in our area since we have deep snow. Mild winters find us searching side hills and low ground. The deer seem to perfer browsing in these areas on the way to feeding areas then they do hill tops. Conditions play a good part on how we search an area. Pay attention to deer sign as that will show you how they use an area and what specific areas should produce a few sheds. Carry binocs with you. Very handy for picking out sheds and saves on the walking in open areas or fields. Tim |
RE: sheds anyone????

RE: sheds anyone????
Went out again this weekend looking in some areas I haven't checked out yet that was near the spot I've found other sheds. I took a friend with and Lo and behold we found some more. I found a small three point and my buddy found a five point and a four point. It still amazes me at how much the deer hearded up in this one food source area during the cold and snow when they dropped their antlers. I'm sure to some of you guys that find dozens of sheds each year it's not a big deal, but for me who usually stumbles onto one or two a year by accident this is great. I've gotten six so far since feb., and the two my buddy found makes eight drops from this one area. Have only found one matching pair, the rest are all from different bucks.
BTW, the three we found on saturday were chewed all up already, kinda bummed us a little 'cause the two my buddy found were nice racks, but chewed on really good. Man I can't wait to see the buck activity in there this fall, I'm positive they will disperse to different areas but a couple will stick around.......I'll be perched in my tree waiting!! |

RE: sheds anyone????
Here in SE Kansas my deer cams have about 1/2 the bucks missing antlers as of March 1. I have pics of 1 deer wearing 1 side while the other side has dropped. Now it's March 11 they're probably mostly all dropped so I'll start looking.
