Hi Big_Buck_Archer,
Any gauge from 20 or bigger is suitable. And particularly in 12 gauge any cartridge length is fine. I'd shoot several brands and styles to determine if your particular gun has a preference, concerning accuracy, for one or another. Any have enough energy.
Another consideration prior to buying the slugs......will you be using a smoothbore.....or a rifled barrel? And buy slugs appropriate for the barrel, (they are marked on the box in most cases)!
Good luck in your endeavor.
Dave
P.S. If it is at all possible try to select a gun with either rifle type sights.....or a scope. It makes accurate shooting sssoooooo much easier!

New Jersey has always been shotgun only so here is what we have found.
12ga is the best all around gauge
Rifling is preferred for barrels.
2 3/4" or 3" both work well but many of s stick with the 2 3/4" due to less recoil and good accuracy out to 100 yds. The extra power of the 3" doesnt always mean much when most shots are under 50 yds.
Scopes help a lot when tree stand hunting is the method.

I AGREE WITH BROADHEAD 88... 2-3/4" IS JUST FINE IN BOTH 12ga. AND 20ga. I TOOK A BLACK BEAR THIS YEAR WITH MY 12ga. USING 2-3/4" LIGHTFIELDS, HERE IN NEW JERSEY

As long as were discussing Jersey hunting with slugs, my farthest was 110 yds. (Used a rangefinder), 12 ga. 2 3/4. She dropped in her tracks .And no bruises from needless recoil like you would get using 3".

i also agree with broadhead, i had been using a 20 ga with 2 3/4 slug s for years and killed lotsa deer with good accuracy, the past 2 years i have used a 12 ga with 3 in slugs and i have not filled my tags, partially due to the fact i have been waiting on the big one and most of my shots the past two years were on the last couple days of the season at ovr 75 yards at deer on the run, but i do think the extra recoil you get with 3 inchers does affect your long range accuracy.
