You can buy a basic 15' ladder stand from BassPro for about $55-65.

We've built some basic stands.

3 16' 2x4's and a chep pallet from work.

2 16' 2x4's for the ladder and the other for the ladder steps. Attach to the pallet for the base with lag bolts.

We raised it to the tree with ropes and used a lot of rachet straps on it.
Burried the 2x4's in the ground about 2' for stability.
Still not as sturdy as we'd like.

we've built ladder stands out of steel. basic looking like what you would buy but a whole lot sturdier. made then 18FT. we used 1 inch squar tubing and 3/4 in. square tubing for the ladder. soem expanded metal for seat and platform. also made a little wider so you feel more stable when you have to stand for a shot. ladder in 2 sections and pieces slides into other section about 8 inches then we used pins to lock sections together. email me and i'll send you the plans if you'd like. cost anywhere from $65 to $70 to build but will last about 10 times longer than you cheap version at the store. one guy returned his expensive cabellas model and had us build him 2 he like dthem so well.
