RE: NEED HELP RIGHT NOW !!!!!!!!!!!
Ah crap why doesnt ignore work?
Anyway, the globe is round, your in winter, your pole is farther away from the sun then the equator, hence your sunrise is later then ours. Didnt you learn that in science? Cmon now man heh you know that right? |
RE: NEED HELP RIGHT NOW !!!!!!!!!!!
i'd have to say, id definately be mad, and you did the right thing, looking for her for hours, but theres always the chance that maybe you didnt hit her in her vitals, coulda been and inch or two off and just injured her.. she could run a good 200 or 300 yards, but still... no reason for no blood trail.. that is odd.

RE: NEED HELP RIGHT NOW !!!!!!!!!!!
Planning on going out early and looking for her again today, Im hoping that it'll still be okay to load her up and bring her home, Id hate to think I just fed every skunk and raccoon for miles [:@]

RE: NEED HELP RIGHT NOW !!!!!!!!!!!
i dont know where youre from, but in VA, the sun rises as early as 4:48am. the records show at the VA Dept of inland fishery and game website. they have a whole listing of when the sun rises and sets for the hunters to know what time to get up in the morning. not trying to start trouble, just setting the facts straight.

RE: NEED HELP RIGHT NOW !!!!!!!!!!!
Oh yea just so you know, I was born in Scranton PA, and you should know that your sunrise is about 30 minutes behind ours if not longer, its called the globe, learn it, it works wonders. Not trying to bully anyone. You just aren`t making sense in your posts. I can`t imagine a 47 year old man who has been in the military having this kind of a problem with a rifle, or shooting a deer at 50 yds. I do hope ya find her though. |
RE: NEED HELP RIGHT NOW !!!!!!!!!!!
Thank`s for the info Billy. I think if you look again at that chart, you will see that the earliest time you saw occured around june 21st. It sure does not rise anywhere near that early 2 or 3 days after the shortest day of the year.
|
RE: NEED HELP RIGHT NOW !!!!!!!!!!!
Honestly Big Country, I know your smarter then this, look up the earths rotation during winter.
I dont have a problem shooting a deer at 50 yds thats what Im saying, reread the first post in this entire thread, then answer to the best of your judgement. No flaming neccessary, just hey, maybe you have seen deer stop after theyve been shot, or maybe you know for a fact that means I missed. Who knows, How far can a deer run whose been shot in the vitals or gut. I would think I shot her in the vitals, as the first deer I smacked left a major splash of blood on the ground but then as I said, nothing. And I looked man, I really did, you have no clue, trust me, It was a real let down today to tell friends that I still couldnt find the deer I had shot. |
RE: NEED HELP RIGHT NOW !!!!!!!!!!!
yes i know, i was just merely stating the fact that it does rise earlier that 6am, now that i see youre from PA, i realize that you know this and you pretty much have the same sunrise as me, so you know how it goes. but it also says you can hunt 30 minutes before sunrise, which today the sunrise was 7:22am so you really can hunt at 6:52. i know this isnt quite 6:00, but he probably didnt realize this when he was out there, and he probably just gave an estimate time of when he was out there. i know when im out there and i see a deer and my adrenaline is pumping and my heart sounds like a helicopter flying by, i usually dont drop my gun and say "hmm, i wonder what time it is...". you just gotta take this in mind and not start reeming him for it. you knew what he meant, "it was early, the sun just rose". i am not trying to be a dick or in any way make you mad. just trying to state my opinion i guess.

RE: NEED HELP RIGHT NOW !!!!!!!!!!!
Who knows, How far can a deer run whose been shot in the vitals or gut. I would think I shot her in the vitals, Depending on the type of bullet you are using, the animal could go right down, or run quite a ways. With very rare exception, the critters I shot with rifles hit the deck at the point of impact. But I could load up some 7mag rounds with say..some 162gr BTSP`s and a big powder charge and pump one right through both front shoulders and it would never mushroom. If you hit the deer through the lungs(both of `em)it should never make it 100 yards. Through the guts....literally miles if you pushed her. Liver shot....they are funny. I have seen liver only shot deer go down inside of 50 yards. And I have seen them go for hours. Go figure. My best advise when using a rifle, if you can`t get one through both lungs....drill `em in the near shoulder bone. It will frag through lungs and heart, and the deer will drop right there. |
RE: NEED HELP RIGHT NOW !!!!!!!!!!!
170 grain Lokt Tite soft point.
30-30 Marlin at 50 yards, it should have spun that deer around in a 720. :( |
RE: NEED HELP RIGHT NOW !!!!!!!!!!!
Ok you test your scope but are you bullets expanding.
Bet there not and you get just a small hole at the exit point. Still I'll bet there both down some where. |
RE: NEED HELP RIGHT NOW !!!!!!!!!!!
maybe, but you should have seen the first deer I smacked, it looked like someone had tossed a water ballon full of blood, there was blood all over the tree that had been behind the deer, I know I hit her, I know she has a headache, and I know it probably took a full surigcal team to close her back up.
Its just the brush is so thick... I saw where she was hit, I saw the first pool of blood, I saw her jump into a bush and then.... Gone. |
RE: NEED HELP RIGHT NOW !!!!!!!!!!!
You say thatyou saw her jump then the 2nd one run a few feet.
Did you notice what there tails were doing up or down did they hunch up when you shot them or just drop there belly down? |
RE: NEED HELP RIGHT NOW !!!!!!!!!!!
The first one I shot I sprayed her blood everywhere, I shot and she just actually froze, I cocked my 30-30 again for another shot to put her down and she as gracefully as you can after being shot, jumped into a bush and was gone.
The 2cd one is the wierd one, there were 4 deer, I shot her, her but hit the ground, well, her body "swayed" very hard Ill put it like that, then she ran no more then 20 yards at the most, and she stopped and looked right at me. The rest of the deer FLEW out of there and were gone visually in seconds if that. I had enough time to take another bullet out of the box, load it into the 30-30, cock the gun, aim and fire, when I fired the 2cd time she kissed the ground, and then she ran, I watched her as far as I could, and about 20 minutes later when I went looking for her, I could hear "something" moving, but could not verify it was here, I went to where I had last seen her, I saw no blood trail at all, I walked up and down the rows of the pines and in and out, spent 4 hours in 5 acres of wodds, she was no where to be seen. |
RE: NEED HELP RIGHT NOW !!!!!!!!!!!
Next day, (today) Christmas, I leave the house at about 6am, I get into my truck and turn my lights on, there are 4 deer standing at my mailbox, not EVEN 50 yeards away, I could hit them with a gravel if I tried. I get out of the truck, I load one bullet, I shoot the largest female, ALL the other deer are flying out into the woods, she stands there long enough for me to get out another bullet out of the box, load it into my 30-30, and aim and fire again at her. There isnt a person on this board that wouldnt have shot one of those deer at that time sitting 50 yds from their house with gunshots from other hunters going off around the area. Amusing, I just fired off 40 shots at Pepsi bottles from exactly 100 yards. I missed 6 [quoteWhy does everyone on here have to preach to people all the time about right and wrong instead of just trying to help the person? ]
Because it's all about right and wrong and ignaramous' like this makes us/me sick!!!! of course you may be right .........who cares about right or wrong as long as you're having fun and letting lead fly.... Start your preaching now flamers. Anyway roadhunter whatever floats your boat, you won't find any sympathy from me about your deer story. Frankly you make me sick. |
RE: NEED HELP RIGHT NOW !!!!!!!!!!!
Keep looking and I'll bet you find them!
Still it sounds to me that your bullets are not expanding right almost sounds like there expanding late and not doing a lot of damage inside. If they expanded when they hit the 2nd ribcage it look like a real good hit and good sized exit hole when it realy went straight thru with very little inturnal damage. |
RE: NEED HELP RIGHT NOW !!!!!!!!!!!
ORIGINAL: NY Bowhunter Snipped, I hate listening to idiots. Cool, someone else to ignore. |
RE: NEED HELP RIGHT NOW !!!!!!!!!!!
I didn't say you were married and I didn't say you had any kids. The only thing I said was I would not have shot the deer in my yard. You were making a blanket statement concerning everyone on the board and I was pointing out that you were wrong.
The "buck/doe fever" is in reference to hunters that shoot their rifle and they don't really know where the bullet is going, usually from having a case of the shakes. It has nothing to do with the time of season or how many deer you have seen during the season. |
RE: NEED HELP RIGHT NOW !!!!!!!!!!!
I dont have shakes from seeing a deer though mate, no doe fever here trust me, the first one I know for a fact I hit and the second, If I missed it, Ill give all of my guns away.
|
RE: NEED HELP RIGHT NOW !!!!!!!!!!!
This fall I shot a mulie doe at about 100yards with my ML, she appeared uneffected by the shot except for a limp and the whack it made. She walked about 15 yards turned back at me and then took a half a step and crumbled. The bullet went between the ribs and took out both lungs. The first deer you should have found if it left a big splatter. Second deer you more than likely missed her on the first shot and connected on attempt number 2. When they drop their nose to the dirt it usually indicates a hit of some sort in the body. If she hunched you punched the guts and she could easily go a long ways. A liver shot same result can occur, it sounds like you bumped her, so I highly doubt you got the lungs or heart if you waited 20 minutes then heard something take off.
The posts of deer fever are warranted, sorry to say. I heard shots, 4 days left in the season, not really knowing where you hit or aimed, etc all are indicators to the pressure on & the fever. I wouldn't have shot the second deer, not with the sign you found from the first. I also would never shoot a deer with headlights or just outline, that would be illegal in my area and if I couldn't make out the features and determine a deer with natural light, than simply it is too dark and not appropriate. I can only speak for myself when saying this and to me it is illegal and unethical. Getting wrapped up in the moment is no excuse for making the wrong decision. What happens if a hunter, house or vehicle is a behind a deer? You must be safe and have control, lets not forget your dealing with a potentially dangerous weapon here guys. This goes to bending the rules of legal time, etc. To me ethics are personal but I certainly wouldn't condone some of the behaviour exhibited in this post. As such when you ask my opinions you must be willing to accept my preaching;) I never said you had to agree! |
RE: NEED HELP RIGHT NOW !!!!!!!!!!!
according to the national weather service, on december 24th 2003, sunrise in the most western part of your state was at 7:38am and sunrise in the most eastern part was at 7:09am. even if legal shooting time is 1/2 hour before sunrise, your still 40 minutes early in eastern north carolina and an hour an 10 minutes early in the western part of north carolina. so either you are a poacher or a liar.
|
RE: NEED HELP RIGHT NOW !!!!!!!!!!!
the frist one i think you hit in the lung and at each puff if air will be a lot of blood you hit her and all you can do now is look and look and keep a eye out for coyotes they may have her now
if you have lots of deer then all you guys that say he should not have shot the 2ed deer can kiss your wife and be back by supper, hell i would of shot it in the headlights, on the road too. just keep looking oh and bring you gun you might hit a new one too hey guys if theirs lots of deer then shoot shoot and eat |
RE: NEED HELP RIGHT NOW !!!!!!!!!!!
hey guys if bigboo saw it was safe to shoot then you better go home or you might end up in the dark ha ha
|
RE: NEED HELP RIGHT NOW !!!!!!!!!!!
BigBoo, you asked for help, people are tring to, as for picking apart and pithing evryone off--you need to chill out, your the one that asked for help, personally i wouldnt have shot the second deer unless i was 110% sure the first was un recoverable, you stated that there was a farm adjoining where you were hunting?-(now only a suggestion)- try looking around where you shot, maybe went to farmers feild-if so its gone-as for the second it sounds like you hit it-just dont give up-keep looking-good luck!
AS skeeter 7mm posted, you dont have to like what our responses are, you have have asked our opinions are we are all trying to help!!!!!! --Good luck-- |
RE: NEED HELP RIGHT NOW !!!!!!!!!!!
The first deer you know you definately hit, I would go back and try and find her.
The second is questionable if you did not find any blood or blood trail, than you probably missed. It's a little different shooting targets up at the range versus standing there and pulling the trigger. Next time at the range, see where your shot are going at 100 yaeds, than try standing and shoot at the target again and see where you are hitting. Maybe you are pulling up? I have shot many deer and even with a heart shot, they can run up to 100 yards or more. The only time I have dropped them in their tracks is with a neck shot. One deer I got this year, I blew out her front shoulders and she sill ran about 30-40 yards before stopping. Good luck, T |
RE: NEED HELP RIGHT NOW !!!!!!!!!!!
[quotehell i would of shot it in the headlights, on the road too. just keep looking oh and bring you gun you might hit a new one too
hey guys if theirs lots of deer then shoot shoot and eat ]
never would have known this by your name bambikiller. This is obviously a hoax and a couple people wanting to stir up a big argument and get everyone wound up. |
RE: NEED HELP RIGHT NOW !!!!!!!!!!!
I just think someone is stealing your deer.
As for the ethics, I've shot deer while standing by my truck. If you're hunting for meat then I don't see anything wrong with being opportunistic about getting a doe for the freezer. That's not saying that I condone getting a deer illegaly, but as long as you are out of the truck and at least the minimum distance from the road then it was legal. Assuming of course that you just posted the time you shot it at wrong and it was during the legal sunrise time. And you were wearing you're state's minimum requirement for blaze orange. Anyway, you may want to check around for other people's tracks in addition to deer tracks next time you look around for those deer. It sounds odd but I've known of a few people who have had deer (even does) stolen. You may want to think about swiching to a bigger gun to anchor you're deer more consistantly. If you are used to a 30-30 then I would use a .444, That seems to work better on deer than even the 45-70 for some reason. At least go up to the .35 rem. I used a 30-30 for years, but it isn't exactly famous for dropping deer in thier tracks. |
RE: NEED HELP RIGHT NOW !!!!!!!!!!!
Upon looking at this whole thread......just another fine example of someone tossin lead!!!! Good job BigBoo, from the sounds of it....you won't be losing any sleep over this one.

Agreed Stump...
BigBoo= BigBung!!! (I'd be surprised if that one stays without being edited by the moderators!) [:o]:D;) Guys like BigBoo give hunters a bad name and I'm not going to read their sorry posts and move on without saying something. Hey BigBoo- Go to the range, sight your gun in, and kill deer instead of just shooting at them and wondering what the ^&*% happened! :D:D:D |
RE: NEED HELP RIGHT NOW !!!!!!!!!!!
BigBoo's gun shoots just fine, shot an 8 point today, will have pictuires very soon, free hand shot it, measured it, 173 yards and 2 feet to be exact, with a 30/30
Nothing wrong with Boo's gun at all. |

Next day, (today) Christmas, I leave the house at about 6am, I get into my truck and turn my lights on, there are 4 deer standing at my mailbox, not EVEN 50 yeards away, I could hit them with a gravel if I tried. Most peoples' mailboxes are on roads. I hope that you weren't shooting across the road. This is how socalled accidents happen. If you don't want ragged on, you have to think before you post. I can't help with tracking advice. If your state allows many kills, I don't see anything wrong with shooting another animal. I am sorry to hear about the lost animals. |
RE: NEED HELP RIGHT NOW !!!!!!!!!!!
Well I'm hoping to see an update that says you found at least one of the deer. I would focus first on the one near home since it's going to be the easiest to find.(don't have to drive to it) do a grid search then a circle search. I know it isn't easy but it's definately worth it when you find your deer. Then I'd go back out to where you shot the first one and do a search for that one. if nothing else, you learn the land better. Even if it's your land, it's still time spent out on the land. Good luck to you.

RE: NEED HELP RIGHT NOW !!!!!!!!!!!
Ok...I'm going to have to be the voice of reason here. I didn't say anything about the mailbox part but I thought it. Yeah that sounds like a problem. 6 am...well at 6 am here it's still dark. But as far as shooting from next to your truck.....hey if you are on your own land, fire away. I live in a neighborhood with lots of houses but everyone has at least an acre of land. some have 15+. I've taken one deer with a bow behind my house and if I saw one during legal shooting time I might use my shotgun to take it. Might. He at least had the courage to list the conditions of the hunt knowing there would be many who would find fault with it. I'm still waiting to hear about him going back out to find those deer. They are both down and dead.

RE: NEED HELP RIGHT NOW !!!!!!!!!!!
This has got to be a joke. I cant imagine someone with as much hunting experience
as Boo says he has shooting at a deer at 6:00am and then trying to tell us the sun was "up". If this is true, then Boo is a poacher, period. I`m not one to bash anybody, but this guy is a loser.[:@] |
RE: NEED HELP RIGHT NOW !!!!!!!!!!!
I just hope when he shot his buck it was incidental and that it happened while he was searching for his downed animals. Otherwise it doesn't speak well for his character. Just my opinion.
|
RE: NEED HELP RIGHT NOW !!!!!!!!!!!
You shot an 8 point at 173yds with a 30-30? Sounds to me you may have shot high on the other deer. Somethings definitely wrong here. You say you shot at pepsi cans and only missed 6 out of 40 shots. You can punch paper or plink as much as you want and still not shoot well at game. I know this for a fact. There are a couple of things that bother me about this thread........ 1 is most mailboxes are next to the road and you may not have been hunting from a road and you may have been the legal distance from the road but you shot towards the road. (Good thing your hunting buddy wasn't coming up the road) 2. It sounds to me like you need to take a seditive of some kind. When you squeeze a trigger, you need to know more than there's going to be a loud bang afterward. 3. I won't even go there on the time of day.
I don't agaree with hunters bashing hunters, but I don't agree with poachers being called hunters!!!!!! You are obviously over the age to be required to attend a Hunters Ed course, but you may find it interesting, informative, and helpful. Also, I too expect better from a Vet. Identify personal weakness yourself........it will hurt less when others point them out. And I don't mind if you click the ignore button after reading this. ![]() |
RE: NEED HELP RIGHT NOW !!!!!!!!!!!
wasnt going to say anymore BUT, even here in VT it was dark @ 6:00, shadows were still only blobs nothing visible, sooo......enough said.
