NEED HELP RIGHT NOW !!!!!!!!!!!
 

Okay deer 1, Im less then 100 yards away, im in woods, I can see her plain as day, I am using a 30-30 Marlin with 170 grain Lok tight points.


I aim right on the shoulder area.

I shoot the deer, BAM, it just stands there, I reload, it runs.


I smoke a cig and go over to where she was standing, there is a HUGE and i mean HUGE splash of blood all over the ground, it looked like someone threw a water ballon full of blood on the ground.

I start looking for a good blood trail, I dont find one.


4 Hours later, I still havent found her.



Next day, (today) Christmas, I leave the house at about 6am, I get into my truck and turn my lights on, there are 4 deer standing at my mailbox, not EVEN 50 yeards away, I could hit them with a gravel if I tried.


I get out of the truck, I load one bullet, I shoot the largest female, her but hits the ground, she runs about 20 yards and she stops.

ALL the other deer are flying out into the woods, she stands there long enough for me to get out another bullet out of the box, load it into my 30-30, and aim and fire again at her.

I shoot her again, she wobbles and runs into the woods.


Im thinking hell yea :D




Yea right, the powers that be...

I look for her blood trail, I know for a fact I hit her both times.
I dont find one.


I have just returned from a pine forest that she ran into, about 5 acres, there is no underbursh and it is very very clear in there.

Its 9am, I still havent found her.




I called my brother in law, first thing he said for both deer, "You didnt hit them"


Any opinions?

Point 1 - If you hit a deer in the vitals (heart lung) it will die. It may take 5-10 seconds. But it will die. How far can a deer run in 10 seconds?

Point 2 - Shoot does in the head with a rifle. Dont tell me its not ethical, been doing it for years with a !00% success ratio. You hit her shes dead. You miss, you get to hunt her again.

How far can a deer run at full speed in 10 seconds? oh , at least 100 yards if not more easily...

Combine that with woods, its bad.

What do you guys think about the fact that I shot the 2cd deer and she ran a little bit and then stopped? I mean she stopped a good 15 seconds eaily.


Do deer normaly do that after you smack them at 50 yds?

No, deer do not normally do that. If you hadn't found blood I would say you missed.

I would work on trailing the deer and not take a shot at any more animals before going to the range and checking the sighting on the rifle.

Just because I have to ask this...


The few deer that I have verifiably shot, have mostly either dropped right on the spot, or are shot, run about 20 yeards and drop.



Is it ever really normal to shoot a deer, have it just stand there for 4 or 5 seconds before it runs, and next question, has ANYONE ever shot or shot AT a deer within 50 yards just to have it run about 20 yards and stand for a GOOD 15 seconds ?

during archery i have seen and heard where the deer just stood there, but never from a gun shot.....remember to look for broken twigs, tracks, matted grass,even muddied water , where they may have crossed,etc. there are many other signs to look for other than just blood...i'm far from an expert on tracking but it's in me...fl.huntress nicknamed scooby doo ....look under grass blades and plant leaves....and dont rush the search......

I had a nice 8 pt buck come walking up to my tree stand, when he got to an open spot about 40-50 yds away I shot him in the boiler room with my .444 Marlin. The deer showed no reaction to the shot and just kept walking. I thought I had missed ( deflection by an unseen branch?) , racked a new shell into the chamber waited for a clear shot, bam. Same thing, the deer keeps walking no reaction. the deer goes 20 yds and stops by a fence line. One more time bam, this time he goes down. When I go over and start flied dressing there are 3 holes right behind the crease of the front leg . Each shot would have been fatal, but this deer gave no indication of being hit? Usually they clamp their tail down and scoot out asap. They seldom go more than 100 yds if hit in the chest, further back into the liver area they can go several hundred yds. gut shot several miles.

This thanksgiving i was setting in my stand and had a good buck come running towards me, he stopped at 80 yards facing me, and I make the decision to shoot him in the chest, He had his head turned sideways but his chest was directly towards me, I'll admit that I flinched and pulled off, the bullet went right through his windpipe (I didnt find this out till later) the buck didnt even flinch. I loaded another shell, he turned and went up the other side of the hollow, he stopped on the side of the hill at a real steep angle, buck fever has me comsumed by now, I shoot again this time aiming for the vitals, and it knocks him off his feet and he rolls to the bottom of the hollow, I think hes down but he jumps back up and runs abotu 15 yards then stops, he stood there for close to a minute, I figured he would drop any minute so I didnt have the scope on him, but he took off running instead and got away, got away from me that is my dad was settin in teh next hollow and dropped him. Upon examination, My first bullet went through the windpipe and the second blew his shoulder up but the anglewas steep enough that the bullet didnt get in deep enough, 1 more inch and he would been a goner. but this buck just stood there and let me shoot at him.

Rack attack has the right idea here. You should not have shot the 2nd deer (unless you had a two doe tag) since you know that you hit 1 very well! I think that you should look at your ethics standards for a second.... [:@]

I live in North Carolina, its open season on all deer, we dont have a "buck" and "doe" tag. We are allowed to shoot 10 deer in 4 months.

Hows that for ethics.

Yes, I always drive with my lights on, BUT it was LEGAL in my state, the sun was up, and as its described as "blackcoat" when you can see the outline of animals but not see thier color.


There isnt a person on this board that wouldnt have shot one of those deer at that time sitting 50 yds from their house with gunshots from other hunters going off around the area.

I wouldnt have shot at the second group of deer,, until I looked for the first.

To answer your question,, last year I walked into a 2-3 acre field in the middle of a thick cedar swamp. There was a doe, a fork and a nice eight point in it, all within 80 yards of me. The doe took off running, the fork continued to graze, the 8 point tried to play hide and seek. I shot the 8 point,, the fork ran a 15 yard semicircle,, looked around for a second and continued to graze!

I just couldnt pull the trigger on it and I had several oppurtunites in the next 10 minutes and a couple times while field dressing the 8. I ended up watching that deer walk right into my buddy after I had the crosshairs on it about 5 or 6 times! He put his crosshairs on it once!:)

I think you better figure out where your gun shoots and another thing is if you can't hit the kill zone the size of the chest, there NOWAY your going to hit one in the head, kinda sounds like Doefever may have set in. Bobby;)

I looked for the first deer for 4 hours at LEAST.
I am thinking it ran into the farmers field next to my land. My land is mostly wooded but totally surrounded by cattle fields.

If it ran into one of them, then there is no way I could chase it, I dont fancy hopping over 4 ft high electrified fences, and the farmer is a SEVERE anti hunter.

I don't see a problem with his ETHICS at all if he can kill 10 deer in his state.
Why does everyone on here have to preach to people all the time about right and wrong instead of just trying to help the person? BigBoo I would have shot at both deer also and maybe another one if it had stopped and looked back. Good luck trying to find them.

Uh, I guarantee that I would not have shot the deer in my yard. I have a green field, feeder and plenty of deer in my yard every day that I could legally shoot, but they are for the enjoyment of my wife and grandkids to watch.
Sounds like you may have had a touch of buck/doe fever to me.

Yea Boo, I live in NC, and if I recall the regs correctly, legal shooting time is 1/2 hour past sun-up. If you had your lights on and still could not see the color of the animal but only the silhouette, the there is one issue. The next, it sounds like you might be young in your number of years hunting. You need to get with a more experienced hunter and learn how to trail a wounded deer. If thats not possible, find a good dog.

When the deer are running off, are you paying attention to the direction they are running? If you find splatters of blood, are you looking in the direction they ran for a blood trail? You might not find large splatters every 3 feet. It could be more like a drop every 10 or 20 yards. Take a roll of TP (toilet paper) and leave a piece at every place where you last find blood. This way, if you loose the trail, you can back up and find it again.

What I said if you reread it correctly, is that according to NC Game commision "Black coat" is a term used to describe when sun is UP but you cannot with the naked eye see the color of the animal, only the silohette (sp?)

And yes it IS legal to shoot them.


Why the hell couldnt I see a friggin deer at 50 damn yards with truck high beams on...

You can legally shoot once the sun has risen, if its 3am in Alaska and the sun has risen, its legal to shoot. If your not in my state, my timezone then you have no clue.

Have bow hunted for 14 years, this is my 3rd year gun hunting, I prefer bow actually alot better, and as for tracking... You just had to see the landscape to see what Im talking about...

I watch the deer for as long as I can and I walk in a stright line to where I saw them last. I spent more then 4 hours in 5 acres of woods looking for that deer, and thats not a joke.

Oh yea heh I forgot to mention Im training my boxer puppy to track for me.

Took a tip from a police friend, I took a piece of deer skin and put it in a sock, we play fetch.


Later when he gets older Ill just walk out and tell him to find it, and Im hoping, he will use his nose and sniff for it.


Thats the way they train police dogs to find drugs, so Im hoping it will work for finding wounded deer.

No man, not color blind at all, I was a forward observer in the Army , so Im definatley not color blind.just this is ... about 10 acres of the farm is pure pines, the rest is very HEAVILY wooded area, Im talking get a frigging chainsaw to buzz your way through.


It is the kind here it can take you 30 minutes to walk 100 yards through the brush.

And yes, Ive looked for crows, Ive looked with Hydrogen Peroxide.

Sonny, it does not take a rocket scientist to know that it was NOT legal shooting time anywhere in North Carolina at 6am during the month of december.

As to the rest of your reply to my post....it is pretty easy to act that way when sitting behind a computer. That kind of talk and language is not productive.

Why would you shoot 40 rounds out of a high powered rifle at pepsi cans? Checking your scopes? How many scopes do you put on one gun?

Save me the time of trying to find it on the NC game commission site, and just admit that you shot at a deer WAY before legal, or ethical shooting time.

I don`t need to be in your time zone right this minute. I have hunted dozens of times in every time zone in the lower 48.
