RE: i think i shot a a really nice one....need some input
A 12 gauge slug at 50 yards in the chest? If you hit him like you think, he didn't go far at all. Give him all night and get in there early in the morning and track him slowly. You might wanna listen out for coyotes if you got many. Good Luck. We want pictures.

RE: i think i shot a a really nice one....need some input
For God's sake, keep us informed and good luck. I can't imagine him not being killed by that shot if it was true. Be sure to post pictures if you get him. Good luck!

RE: i think i shot a a really nice one....need some input
if you hit him where you shot it wouldnt surprise me if he went a little farther then you think and no blood....my dad shot a doe that way only on the ground and at a bit of an angle....a lung, liver and all the guts were hit.....from a 3006 at 20yds with a ballistic tip.....it went about 80yds.....not a drop of blood.....the deer didnt act hit either....my dad thought he hit it so followed the leaves it kicked up and found it......dang good tracking job......if the leaves wernt wet i dont think he would found it.....its really thick in there and he couldnt see it after the shot....but thankfully the leaves were wet and kicked up nicely.....only sign of a hit was hair from the shot....if you hit him check good and hard.....he shouldnt went too far......a 12ga slug had to tear him up good......just look very very hard.......goto where you hear him last and keep going in that direction and other likely directions....he should be close......good luck.......keep us posted!!!!i cant stand wehn people ask for tracking advice and leave us hanging!!!! good luck!!!

RE: i think i shot a a really nice one....need some input

RE: i think i shot a a really nice one....need some input

RE: i think i shot a a really nice one....need some input
i did that before only with a 6 shot 3" mag and it was a coyote (which coyotes are hard to spot around here) i called him in during fall turkey season. i shot him at about 25 yards in the throat and he spun around a cupple of times and took off. there was blood on the ground where i hit him but i circled and circled and found no blood or no coyote. so i went on back to hunting turkeys. when it was finally time to quit, i damn near tripped over him on my way back to the truck. he was about 1/2 mile from where i shot him deader than a doornail. what's so funny is, that's not the direction he ran after i shot him. i found him by complete accident!!!

RE: i think i shot a a really nice one....need some input
another thing to possibly look for after a day is for crows to be circling they can find anything anywhere that has died. good luck
|
RE: i think i shot a a really nice one....need some input
good point rcw
also hawks and turkey vultures |
RE: i think i shot a a really nice one....need some input
Wish you the best and yes keep us posted.
A chest on shot can leave very little blood on the ground and often the bullet may not even exit making things worse. I just say this so your not alarmed if you find a meager blood trail. The good news is you heard him flle and what appeared to be him crashing...more than likely your right on the money and he is where the last noise cam from. Be out at sun up, while the scavangers is a great idea birds such as crows, raven will not be on the carcass until sun up but will roost near the fresh kill site and often will lead right to the spot. I hope you either marked the area or have good recall, in any event go to the stand and if you have buddies have them stand at the shot site, replay the entire events and then begin the process. When your dealing with minimal sign, poor tracking weather, not fresh in your mind(next day, later, etc.) or a disturbed area it is best to do it methodically, slow and easy will get the deer. I would concentrate on the last sound and more than likely the thickest stuff close to that area...a grid search is always a good bet. Also make sure to have a roll of trail marker and mark the sign as you find it...one can often go off on the wrong path...this will help at a glance to get back to where you last confirmed he was. If you got a buddy have them stand at the last sign until the next sign and so on. Just don't all go tramping in different directions until you have absolutely nothing. Don't overlook the fact he may have doubled or circled back, so if you think hey wait a minute I am going back to my start point...keep on the sign and let it lead you to your deer. Best of luck! |
RE: i think i shot a a really nice one....need some input
A roll of skid paper is the best and cheapest blood trail marker you can get.

Sounds like a promising hit. Get all the help you can and search long and hard. Good luck on locating this bruiser. Can't wait to see pics!

RE: i think i shot a a really nice one....need some input
I hit one this year with my bow it was a pass through a lot of blood on the arrow and nothing but whit hair and a lot of it. Well to make it short I got the deer the next morning he ran about 100yds and lay down I had hit perfect on the hit but had exited nearly straight down really a very bad shot he was right under me but I still got it.
|
RE: i think i shot a a really nice one....need some input
White hairs could indicate a neck, brisket or underneath hit. However the neck would have dropped him on the spot via shock and the brisket more than likely would have left more dark hairs with the white(depends on the hide colouring he had, up here they tend to be greyish in the brisket area). More than likely you hit true and exited through the stomach area, given the angle, shot placement, finding of white hairs & what appeared to be stomach content this would be an acceptable theory. It could easily result in a poor blood trail as well.
Let us know how you make out and good luck with your bro this aft. |

RE: i think i shot a a really nice one....need some input
I find it very hard to believe that the buck was shot in the chest with a 12 gauge and is still alive. The chance of you not hitting either lung, aorta, heart or liver is pretty much impossible. A dead on chest shot would also certainly puncture it's diaphragm causing major respiratory distress.
I am not doubting your story about the buck.......and I hope you find him soon. I just think that when you do, you will find the shot did not hit like you think it did. I have shot and seen many deer shot with a 12 gauge and they just don't live for 24 hours with a slug hole from chest to tail........especially at 30 yards. I could be wrong of course and will check back to see what you find..........should be interesting. I shot a big buck this year with a 12 gauge right through the lungs and he trotted away like I shot him with a super soaker........thought I missed him for sure. Ran almost 100 yards before he ran out of blood. They can be tough as nails sometimes. My taxidermist told me he did a deer last year that had a broadhead in it's skull with the tip poking into it's brain.........a gun hunter killed that buck while it was chasing does [:o] Good Luck!! |

Good luck Rack, hope you find him.

RE: i think i shot a a really nice one....need some input
hey rack - i had the same thing happen to me, except that i shot it broadside with an underpowered gun...he ran and ran and doubled back and ran some more. we tracked that thing for 3 hours in the freezing dark, so we gave up for that night and i woke up the next morning to mom callin and saying there's a deer about 150 yds from where we quit and in the direction we thought he was running. but he was on the side of the road, and when we got there, somebody cut the rack and the hams off...but he was big, and the shot was right at dark, and from the blood, it looked to be a lung shot (foamy blood) and when we found blood, it was spots as big as a nickel and about 10 ft apart.
i know how you feel, that one woulda been my biggest, too |
RE: i think i shot a a really nice one....need some input
rack...long time no talk....
Go get your deer tomorrow come rain, sleet, snow, or shine. If you saw where he crossed the creek then get as many people as you can to start there and do a grid search. If that deer struggled like you say it did, it didn't go far before it piled up again. As tough as deer are, they can only loose so much blood or take so much damage for they just cannot physically go any further. Go get your deer. |

RE: i think i shot a a really nice one....need some input
Don't forget your gun this time. Sounds to me like the deer appeared to be facing you, but might have been slightly quartering to you. I bet you missed to the side and put the round in the guts. A 12ga. slug through the chest is not gonna live that long.

RE: i think i shot a a really nice one....need some input
Good Luck! It is really sad when somebody loses a deer, so don't let me down. I think you will find it because a 12 guage slug packs a pretty good whallop. I have seen deer get shot in the guts with one and it did not even come near the spine but it sure dropped the deer. Keep us informed on the happenings!;)
|
RE: i think i shot a a really nice one....need some input
I agree with nub. It sounds like the deer was quartering to you and you either pulled the shot off or didn't actually have the crosshairs on his chest. The slug probably hit about the last rib and came out his underside area knocking out the white hairs. No deer with a 12 guage slug directly through the chest from the front is going far. He is probably dead by now and he may not have gone far from the last place you had a trail.

RE: i think i shot a a really nice one....need some input
You know, my dad had the same predicament this year on a big 8point with his bow. Let me tell you the story. We had a stand up that I sat on Friday of that week. I saw the deer that my dad was going to shoot the next day,but I could not get a good shot on it because it saw me drawing back and it just walked away. I knew not to take the shot if the deer was walking away, because i would probably not get it. it was too late anyway. So I let it walk. We came back to the same spot the next day and I decided to let my dad sit it. He had not sat there ten minutes, and in came the same deer. He could not believe it because it came in the exact way and went to the exact same spot that I had told him. It layed down on the trail and my dad decided it was time to take the shot. He drew his matthews back and he let it rip. I heard the mechanical broadhead open up all the way at my stand(about 100 yds away). I heard the buck go crashing through the woods and it stopped then it took off again once again crashing down. It did this several times until it was out of earshot. I knew right away what had happened. he had hit the deer I saw the day before. I got really excited. He came through a little while later and told me about it. We tracked it for 200 yards and then it got too dark on us. the real problem was that it was lightly drizzling and it was starting to rain.We had to quit tracking for the night and wait until early the next morning. Needless to say, we did not get much sleep that night. We went out early the next moring and tracked it another100yards before finding it wedged between 2 trees. That was amazing considering that we had lost all blood and tracks the night before. We just kept doing zig zags every 20 yards until e found the deer. well, my fingers are really tired, so I am going to quit. Hope you did not get a headache from reading this.lol. Hope it helped.;)

Rackassasin: I'm feeling for you right now.
I shot a buck in NYS with my 12ga 2 3/4 rem copper slugs while he was looking at me. I found no blood and he ran off like a bat out of hell. I figured that I missed until I walked over thr ridge and my brother-in-law says the deer wnet "ass over tea kettle" just as he was going to shoot. Went about 100 yards and died. If that deer is not dead then something strange happened with the shot. I hope that you guys can get back in there and do some more poking around. What ZOne were you in?? Bob |
RE: i think i shot a a really nice one....need some input

RE: i think i shot a a really nice one....need some input
You said that you aimed at the base of the neck? If i'm picturing this right then the shot may have gone right over the vitals. Earlier you said you should have aimed for low chest instead of mid chest. I think base of neck is high chest and you should have aimed for mid chest. Anyways good luck, I hope you find him.

RE: i think i shot a a really nice one....need some input
Well at least you got a shot off that was safe right?
ME this muzzleloader season in utah, I was 20 yards away when a giant 5x6 came out of the tree line. this being my first deer season where I was hunting I was shaking so bad that I never got the shot off! well good luck! logic is on your side that the buck is dead. |
RE: i think i shot a a really nice one....need some input
tsk tsk tsk...I did my job. lol.. Didin't I tell you.. RUN M"FER!!! lol..we had that deer..

RE: i think i shot a a really nice one....need some input
rackbro; Get your butt out there and help your brother find his deer.

RE: i think i shot a a really nice one....need some input
Hey rackassasin have you gone back out? It has been 3 days now, I sure hope it is plenty cold or you are going to wind up with nothing to eat but horns. Did you take a dog out?
|
RE: i think i shot a a really nice one....need some input
I really, really hope you went out and looked more and found this buck. In probably your 3rd or 4th post you were already talking in past tense about the deer. Ok...a standing deer at 30 yards and you took this shot? Please tell me your 16 years old and don't know any better... I think this is a good example of shooting a low percentage shot and having possibly another deer dead and not to be found.
|
RE: i think i shot a a really nice one....need some input
You have to keep looking for that deer and let us know what happened. And next time....take your gun.
|
