RE: Fun! What Cal. are you using on deer this year?

Well GBHUNTER,
I own 2 30-06 rifles they have the ablilty to knock down almost anything I need to. I am looking at buying a 7mm-08 for my wife though. It is quite impressive up to about 400 yards with less kick than the 30-06. Remmington has these in a 700 mountain rifle, these are for youth and smaller adults who still like to hunt.
They say that these are good for everything right up to moose. If you are going for bear you might want to stay with the 30-06 and a 200gr round:)

.308 with 150 grain ballistic silver tips.
30/30 with 150 grain soft points
12 guage with 3 1/2" 00 buckshot

The .308 is the primary when hunting from stands. 12 guage for man drives. The 30/30 because it' s been a faithful companion for many years in the past and I can' t seem to leave it out of the season.

Marlin Model 1894 44 magnum carbine. Killed a buck with it on November 1. It doesn' t take a lot to kill a deer if you do your part and place your bullet well. My 44 went through both lungs.

.30-06
12 gauge
.357

just curious, why would anyone use 00 buckshot on a deer. it seems like it would just ruin the animal.

hntngirl 11-13-2003 07:26 PM

RE: Fun! What Cal. are you using on deer this year?

I hunt alot of areas that are really thick and brushy. Most of the deer I' ve shot have been between 6 and 30 feet away. At real close range, buckshot does alot less damage than my rifle. Alot of guys here hunt with buckshot.

Rem 700 VLS 308 shooting 165 gr Serria BTHP or BTSP. Doesnt really matter cuz the POI is the same Just different powder behind them. Which brings me to a question for Troy What is wrong with the stock on these? Strait outta the box it was shooting sub MOA and after i got the trigger lightened down to 2 lbs only made it better I am just courious.
