My first deer was with a 300 Savage Model 99. I've taken several deer since then with 308 Win (I've had about half a dozen rifles in that caliber over the years). I've taken two deer this year with that same 300 Savage that I used for my first deer, and feel confident enough with it to take it elk hunting in south eastern Kentucky next month.
