Hunting keeps going...
Down and Down !!!
Hunters keep looking for those game app stores. Let them find out that you can't hunt and play app games on an iphone, at the same time. But let them learn the hard way. And to think I hunt and don't even own a iphone. I wonder if those deer established an iphone apps store? Go deer!!!! |
I get by with a plain old cell phone. It does all I need a phone to do: Allows me to make and receive calls. I refuse to get anything else. Matter of fact the only reason I even have a cell phone is to keep the wife happy so if something happens while I'm in the field I can call someone. If I wasn't married I wouldn't own one. When I go hunting the phone stays in the glove box of the truck!
|
Here is another non iphone owner. In fact, most of the time the only time my cell phone is on is when I want to use it. I carry it n my posket when hunting in case of an emergency. If one of the few who have my cell # calls me they will get voice mail and if they leave voice mail, it could well be days until I see it. I ust do not understand people who go hunting and atch a screen plaing games instead of watching what is going on around them. It seems the whole world is walking around with their heads tilted downward. ipads, iphones are a main reason for the demise of manners toward other other people. Just watch groups of people sometime and see how many times some in the group check ther phones or answer a text from someone while in a conversation with others. Just plain rudeness, it like saying, wait a minute, there is someone on my phone more important than you to those in the group.
|
No iphone here either. But we have a single emergency cell phone that can only make calls from home if we are on the roof of our house! The art of silently waiting has been lost I think. I confess I have brought a book hunting though.
|
I thought I was the only dinosaur... No I phone or any other kind of "smart Phone". Just don't have a need for it.
|
To me it is a little selfish to leave your phone in the truck when hunting if you have a family.
My phone gets used for hunting for 1. Wind and weather 2. To give my family piece of mind when I'm gone for 2-3 days they can contact me if they need/want to. While hunting I don't remember my cell phone ever even crossing my mind but it is in my pocket. I damn sure don't think about what other hunters are doing with their cell phones because I couldn't care less. |
I have one, but I'll check it when I am alone. There isn't anything that important that I need to interrupt what I am doing to see what made it squawk. Hunting, it is shut off. I see lots of people texting while driving and walking looking at the phone and tripping over whatever is in their path.
|
No Smart phone here either. I carry one of those old dumb phones. My brother in law had a heart attack and died but they were able to bring him back and do a triple by pass. He has been allowed to hunt as long as he can get help to get a deer out of the woods. Since he likes to hunt I am not going to be the one who will not go help him out.
Is also nice to have on a slow day to call my daughter and talk her ears off. :D Al |
I know the spot i'll be hunting next year will have no cell reception. I can see carrying one if you hunt alone in case of an emergency. But I hunted long B4 cell phones were even thought of and got along fine
|
I only have an old cell phone and it's never on unless I want to make a long distance call under the cheap plan we have for our cell phones. We haven't made a long distance call on our land line in years. I do take it with me when I'm hunting just in case of an emergency and when I'm out on my two month trip to Wyoming if I have coverage I try to call home every night to let Mama know everything is okay and to make sure everything is okay here.
|
I reluctantly got a smart phone 2 years ago, and i'm learning to like it, the instant weather updates are nice, i use that feature as a logger and hunter in the long days in the bush.
|
While I can't imagine why anybody would want to play on their phone while hunting an internet forum strikes me as an odd place to criticize smart phones.
It is kind of weird.....whats not to like? Phones make people rude and bring hunting down about like guns commit murder. I got my first smart phone a year or so ago and I certainly don't hate having the weather forecast and wind direction on my phone. |

When you hunt in areas like I do that have virtually no cell phone reception, what sense does it make to carry one in the field? Just more weight to pack. Not everyone hunts in the corn fields around their houses. Some of us hunt in some really rugged and remote country in the Rockies.
If you have it you may not be able to use it. If you don't have it you for sure can't use it. |

Carry your phone if you want to. I'll pass on that. You don't mind if I do that do you? We can agree to have a difference of opinion right? |

I'm sure it does. But then, it is obvious to the most casual of observers that I'm not you and you're not me. I spent over 25 years in the military and pretty much know how to take care of myself including doing major first aid on myself if injured. I carry a pretty extensive triage kit including a tourniquet and blood clotting material and an emergency beacon if I get laid low. All initial first aid is self-administered first aid anyways. That's one of the first things they teach you when you go into combat. But then, you've never been in combat have you?

No I don't have combat experience but I did carry a war vet out of the bottom of a hollow with a broken leg in the middle of the night after he fell coon hunting and laid there for hours. You do what you want. You already said you have a cell phone because your wife wants you to carry one in the field but then you leave it in the truck.......to me that is very selfish but again your wife ,your phone, your business. To me your actually being selfish enough to miss the whole point.....Its not about you its about your family(if you have one). Its just my opinion.....your wife wants you to carry one for a reason. If your to hard headed to carry one to make here feel better I'm sure I can't convince you otherwise. |
If you don't care what Flags does, then why are you giving him so much negative criticism in how he does things?! FYI that emergency beacon he uses out in the boonies is a heck of a lot better and quicker at contacting someone than a telephone when there is no cell service. Therefore, he's more than keeping in touch with his wife when his phone is usable and when it's not he can trust the other method for immediate help and contact with civilization. Hunting where you are in the heavily populated midwest is a completely different ballgame than out in the mountains where Flags and I do most of our hunting and I think you missed the gist of what he was saying as far as his communication methods!
|
Still trying to figure out how not carrying a phone you cannot use is selfish! If there is no service, the phone serves no more purpose in a coat pocket than it does in the truck glove box. Just imagine all the hardships hunters suffered before there was any such thing as a cell phone or smart phone, it must have been terrible.

All that and you can't find the room for a cell phone? Sounds extremely hard headed to me.
I started hunting long before things like cell phones and things like GPS existed. I shot my first deer in 1971. I managed to function just fine without a phone in the field and I never worried about getting so badly injured that it was an issue. I have complete faith in my abilities and am not at all concerned if I don't have a phone with me. I'm not concerned with getting lost either because I know how to use a compass and a map. Here's a question: Would you stop hunting if you couldn't have a phone with you? If your answer is no, then you just proved that it isn't a vital piece of gear and you can function without it. I'll trust my skills and my abilities. You carry your phone. I won't. To each his own. I won't judge your actions and request the same level of courtesy from you but I doubt I'll get it since I disagree with your opinion. By the way, Genius, you may want to go back and actually read my first comment about cell phones. I said I only have the phone because my wife wants me to carry it so I can call someone but in order to do that I will have to drive to a place that the thing works! So the glove box is the right place to keep it. My wife knows the types of country I hunt and she knows I'll often be out of touch for days or even weeks at a time. She did 8 years in the Army herself and knows I have the skills to take care of myself with or without a phone. If you actually depend on a phone to keep you safe in the field then you need to brush up on your survival skills and woodsman-ship. Like you said, my wife, my family so don't get your panties in a twist about how I do things. I'm pretty sure I don't need or want your blessing one way or the other. lmao, you 2 are cracking me up!!! :lmao:
I advocate the carry of an EMERGENCY devise be it an emergency beacon (good call Flags) an emergency Sat phone if you are going to be in areas without typical cell reception, or a cell phone if you are going to be in areas with RELIABLE cell reception. With today's advancements in communication, there really is no excuse NOT to carry some form of emergency devise just in case. Granted, I as well as many other old timers on here, grew up in a time where a phone without a cord was unheard of and unless you had a military quality walkie you were lucky to be able to talk more than 500 yards from your buddy! All this crappolla around nowadays takes away the real pleasure of hunting which is being one with nature. NOT your head in a game of angry birds! |

Besides I never said I couldn't find room for a phone, I said it was simply extra weight to carry for no reason if there is no cell phone reception. You got that part right? Why would I tote something that simply does not work in the areas I hunt? I'd rather fill that area in my daypack with a wad a parachute cord or a couple energy bars. I've lived out of a daypack for a week without returning to the truck and don't have the luxury of carrying worthless items around.

I get virtually no service as well but there is a chance if there is an emergency I will at some point catch a little service and get a message and that possibility makes my wife feel better so I do it. Its not just about an actual emergency. Its also about all the times there is no emergency but my my wife feels a little better and worries a little less knowing I have it. |

What point of that do you not grasp? I hunt in the Rocky Mountains and not in the Mid-west. There is a world of difference there. Face it Otis, we are going to have to agree to disagree with this. I suggest you let it die right now because if I post again it will be because you refuse to respect my views on the matter. |
service is absent where i hunt so i don't carry a phone in my pack. it gets left in the truck and is more or less just a camera for me should i pass something interesting until service returns

There are no cell phone towers for miles in any direction. That's why I carry an emergency beacon and keep the phone in the glove box of the truck. It has nothing to do with being "selfish" it has to do with the fact the damn phone is worthless where I hunt. If the phone worked, I'd carry it but that isn't the issue.

I don't get cell service were I hunt, so I don't take my phone. Usually hunt with my father so we have Motorola talkabout radios we carry. We also let people know the location we are hunting have two main properties we hunt so usually let my grandmother know with one we are hunting.

I always have my phone on me. I usually spend some time reading different articles while I'm sitting there. I have trouble sitting all day if the hunting is slow. Don't get me wrong I love staring at trees as much as the next guy but it gets old after 4 or 5 hours. I wouldn't say I'm any less in tune with what's going on than someone who's just watching squirrels or something. If you're not sitting then I could see where using a phone would be distracting and detrimental. Also, my phone doubles as a flashlight and a compass assuming it's not dead. So if for some reason I needed a compass or a light and didn't have mine my phone would do in a pinch. That being said, about the only thing my phone will be good for when we go to Colorado will be pictures and maybe an alarm.
