I don't want to start a big debate on baiting, but if you are baiting, be aware that your almost daily walking in and out can cause the deer to go nocturnal. Up by me, the deer on public land will end up doing this by late season if a lot of hunters are baiting. And I am guessing you are visiting the site often cause like WI, you are limited to 2 gallons. So a way to prevent this is to have a variety of hunting sites and only do short-term baiting that spans 4 or 5 days. Day 1 you bait with 2 gallons, and preferably dropping bait in midday. Day 2 you do not visit site since some deer may be lingering around. Day 3 you bait with 1 gallon. Day 4 you bait and hunt. On Day 4 you hunt, either bagging a deer or not, but you then move on to a different site. You choose the days based on weather/wind forecast. Baiting this way minimizes contact with deer and disease. And during the peak rut, don't expect a big buck to come up to your bait - they will be mostly interested in the does that your bait draws in, and they will probably know where you are if you are walking in to the area daily.
