Default Deer report for N/W Wisconsin

I'm seeing lots of deer this year here in western WI. Some of the bucks have'nt shed their velvet yet , which is the first year ever for me to see this here. Lots of does and most with twins, even after our rough late winter snow storms last year. My camera pics had some real dandy bucks and several smaller ones too. The camera is put away and I am after "the Big One" but will not pass on a large doe for the freezer.

Good Hunting to all!

I am guessing you are not in Zone 2 but in the zone below. In our northeast corner of Zone 2 there are virtually no deer. Many hunters from Zone 3 (no bonus tags) and the zones south and west (no baiting) may be flocking up to our zone to fill their freezers since Zone 2 allows baiting and sells extra bonus tags. I go running every other night and drive over 1/2 hour after dark and see NO (as in not one) deer!

Yes, zone 22a and on private land. It varies greatly if you go five miles in either direction though.

Too many hunters pulling the trigger for too many years. Doesn't take long to hammer the herd. Need more bear and yote hunters too.

I'm originally fom WI. I was talking to my uncle who lives in Vilas county. He told me baiting may be going away for the whole state next year. Some board voted on it last month. Hope you guys put a hurting on the wolves this year. I do remember not seeing a deer all gun season a couple years ago. Pretty bad.

I still wonder if the wood ticks did not drive out or kill off deer? We had ticks in numbers unheard of this year, and it was mostly this area where I am guessing the heavy late snows allowed the ticks to grow to such large numbers. I was seeing deer sign in the spring - at least some sign.

I don't know bout the ticks killing the deer off but our area really took a hit a few years ago. There was a slaughter of anterless with the cheap $2.00 tags.

There were some people round here that had as many as 15 anterless hanging on their deer pole after season. It took us three years with habitat management, tree harvesting, food plots and not shooting does to get the deer herd back. We had an agreement with some neighbors to work on this together. Since, we have shot very few does, large bucks and have had a good rebound.

We manage the herd with out the DNR's help by seeing whats there, by cameras and taking some anterless and large Bucks. This is how we do it, not say'n its the only way, just works for us. I feel sorry for the hunters that have to hunt public land and see no deer.
