You just have to put your time in and be where the deer are. Sometimes ladyluck is with you and sometimes she makes you work for it. I've shot a lot of deer sense my first and every time I shoot one, my heart still races 100mph. Play the wind and hunt hard. Good luck and let us know when you become a whitetail addict. Cause when you shoot that first one, you won't be able to stay out of the deer woods.

You would of thought I had shot the new state record, the way I was hoot and hollering. It didn't matter to me, I had my first deer and my dad was there to share the moment with me. Nothing beats sharing those special moments in the woods with your family. Even my wife and 2 daughters came into the woods to see my deer. And I'm proud to say that both of my daughters are hunters and have shot deer while I was with them. And even though 1 is in college and the other on her way in the fall, they still hunt when they can.

That is awesome that your daughters hunt!

New guy here, been reading things on this site for a while though. Just got into deer hunting 3 years ago. Missed one my first year, shot two doe last year, had a heck of a year this year with a muzzleloader buck and 3 doe with the rifle. My buck (first ever buck) is a story I'll never forget. Took my 4 year old son and my 7 year old daughter out with me for the first time and had a nice 8 pointer come out. We watched him for 15 minutes and then I took him with (first muzzleloader deer also). Got him field dressed with the kids help and then hung in the barn. While skinning I got in a hurry and ran the skinning knife deep in the palm of my hand. I was pretty calm as I didn't want the kids to freak out. Drove an hour to the ER, got 8 stitches and finally walked out of there at 1 in the morning. Got the buck on the wall, a nice scar on the palm and a memory that will last forever. Even with the cut, wouldn't change a thing. Getting to harvest a deer with my two kids was one of the greatest joys I've had in life so far.

Thanks. I beam with joy when they say they want to go deer or turkey hunting with me. At least out in the woods their not distracted by cell phones and boys and they can enjoy life the way it should be. Even if it is only for a few hours at a time.

My first deer was a spike buck shot with a gun when I was about 15. Thought I missed it, but when my Dad came by to take a look, there is was, right where I shot! I think I remember my son's first deer better. Heard the shot and there was my son hurrying in to tell me he got the deer! He was 14.

good story! I got my wife into deer hunting 2 seasons ago...shes killed 2 her first season and one this (2012) season..we only get one deer tag out here unless you get an out of state tag or a draw tag to a total of 3 possible..

If you like rifle hunting...try bow hunting too...its even more of a rush! I think my first deer was a button buck I shot with a 270. The first buck I shot with a bow was a spike/ technically a smaaaaaall 4 point as it did have small brow tines but I call it a spike...I called it in with a doe call and it came in to 15-20yds and I got him with my compound bow. While not a trophy animal it was a neat experience and he made some good chili

Great story and congratulations.

My first bagged deer was a cow horn spike. I killed him with my "Wonder Bow" , cedar shafted arrows tipped with 160 gr. broad heads. forget the brand. This was in the fall of 1963. I was almost 15. I rode my old Murray bicycle to the edge of a swamp that was on the east end of a family friend's property. I shot the buck around 7:30 a.m. as I recall, at about 15 - 20 yards from my brush blind. I can still recall the arrow's flight, the hit and how the deer whirled off splashing through the knee deep water.

I was naive about letting an arrowed deer lay, and took off after him almost immediately. I was so excited. It finally fell dead about 1/4 mile farther into the swamp. I field dressed it. Recovered my precious arrow (represent a lot of yard mowing back then). Took me well over 2 hours to drag it to my bike. I tied it straddling the bike frame with my boot laces and started walking home - I lived about 1 1/2 mile from where I had parked left the bike in the field. A buddy's father happened by and gave me and my "big"' buck a ride to a local grocery, where the spit and whittle club oohed and aahed over it for a while before Mr. Calcote took me home. I hung it from a swing set frame, and skinned it out best I could. Deer were scarce in that part of La. back then. My dad hunted about 6-8 weekends every year for over 12 years and never got one shot off. So I was a celeb for a while.

Then it took me only about another 12 years to ever get another bow shot at a deer !
