Have any of ya'll given much thought to doing something about passing on the fun we experience from shooting and hunting to the next generation of voters? Here in Texas we have several groups that have set up programs to do just that because we believe that if we don't we will soon lose our rights to do so through a lack of interest on the part of the general public.
I work with the Texas State Rifle Assoc. and we host several events every year where we take kids out hunting or shooting. For example we try to host an NRA style youth shooting sports fest every other year. The last event hosted over 400 first time shooters from the Houston area and included learning how to shoot muzzleloaders, cowboy action shooting, sporting clays and .22 rifles.
We also host 4-6 youth hunts each year that introduce youngsters to the joys of hunting and helping to feed their family while learning more about our hunting heritage and the outdoors. Is anyone else on this board involved in helping to pass on our sport like this?

I'm not really a member of an organized effort, but I do take my kids out and teach them. Also, I'm a member of a rod/gun club that sponsors a youth hunt on MD Youth Hunt Day.

I will be taking a young man with me this spring, turkey hunting. He has told his mother that he would like to learn how to hunt. She doesn't know anything about it, and doesn't trust anyone to show him how to do it. She called one night out of the blue, and asked if I would show him how to do it the right way, and I said yes. His father is a police officer in town, and doesn't have much to do with him. He is only nine years old, and Missouri now has a youth season for turkey and deer, usually the week before the regular season opens. I will never say "No" to a youngster who wants to go learn about the outdoors as I did when I was younger. I hope nobody else that reads this never does either.

The way I look at it over the years we have picked up some valuable info on hunting and hunting tatics.
What sort of people would we be if we dont pass this info onto the next generation.
I first took my son hunting when he was 3 and he has been hunting ever since.
He has his first child on the way now and I cant wait to take my first grandchild hunting.
I will take any child hunting and try and pass on to them the knowledge that I have learnt over the last 40 years of hunting

I became a Hunter Safety Instructor for just this reason. Great fun passing info on to the next generation. I've introduced my own kids to the shooting sports, as well as several kids from church. Last couple of years I've taken young hunters out on their first hunts since their dads don't hunt. Those of us who've been around a while need to do what we can to pass on the sport.
