improved is more open than a modified.
if you are using a screw in choke barrel use an improved cylinder if you CAN NOT find a cylinder choke. you want the absolute least constriction on the slug as possible to ensure no deformation. if you plan to use it alot i would suggest sending it to a choke maker and having them form a choke to your barrels specs.

The improved cylinder is what I have found works the best for me with a couple different kinds of foster (rifled) slugs. My 870 shoots a ragged hole (around 1 inch actual group due to the fosters being so big) at 50 yards off the bench with a 26" barrel and bead sight. I would have no problem shooting out a little farther either. The Remington sluggers and Winchester super x rifled slugs in 2-3/4" works great in my gun but I suggest buy as many different brands and seeing what the gun likes best.
