I had the opportunity to take a doe that had a spotted yearling with her. I DID NOT take the shot. What has amazed me the most is that it was my first year deer hunting and I passed up a deer. I look back and I have no regrets not taking either one. They sure were pretty to watch.

I won' t take a doe that has a fawn with spots. Maybe it' s the Bambi syndrome in me but if the fawn has no spots, I will put Mama' s brown on the ground. CDH

Nope, I guess I am too soft I find a dry to taste better, I attribute it to less stress as momma does are always worried and on alert with lttle ones around. However i may be just making excuses for being to soft hearted, but I have ample oportunties to harvest a doe and we can only take one per year so why rush it

I would shot the doe in a heartbeat. For one thing I have never seen a fawn so small that it can' t survive on its own here in Iowa by the time season rolls around. The second reason is if there is a fawn following you can be completely sure that it is a doe and not a button buck. If you are in need of controlling the population like most areas are the mature does are the ones that need to be harvested. They are the ones that produce the most twins.

What I would like to know is why does every animal on this planet become a yearling after it reaches it`s first birthday except for the whitetail deer? The whitetail deer seems to become a yearling at 5 months of age.

Nope, can' t do it. Had two doe and three 1st year little ones. I let them pass hoping for a buck. No buck, but it was fun watching them play.
