The mix we have used for decades we get from a local Quality Co-Op. It is called Buck Blend. Runs about $15/50#. Has buckwheat, forage oats, Elbon rye (a grain rye) and some pre-innoculated Crimson clover. To this we add about 5#/acre of additional Crimson clover. Some years we will over seed and very lightly drag in an area near the field's edge with about 1 lb. of Purple Top turnip.
I hunt SE Alabama near Columbus, Ga. Traditionally we plant no sooner than about Sept. 20. We used to plant Labor Day weekend, but after years and years of losing a lot of the food plot crop to October droughts and heat spells, we delayed our planting by about 2-3 weeks. Has worked out much better.
