hunting WMA's North Central VA
I work construction and travel to different parts of the Eastern US. I will be in North Central VA thru the winter and was thinking about deer hunting on some of the public land. (don't know where to start to look for private land opportunities) Does anyone know much about the WMA's in this area?
Thanks.
Thanks.

JB - there are some good WMAs in the area - though some can get rather crowded on the weekends.
CF Phelps is a popular and productive area -though very crowded on weekends.
The Thompson WMA is in the mountains and a little less crowded - some great areas if you are willing to walk a bit, and from my experience, pretty vacant if you can get in there during the middle of the week (my favorite).
The Rapidan is a great WMA too - up in the mountains.
I guess a lot depends on which part of north-central Virginia you will be in.
Feel free to PM me if you have specific questions about the area.

What Vulture said. If you have 4x4 capability, you can get in to some great spots in Rapidan and Thompson WMA.
There's a WMA Hunters forum. Its hit or miss, depending on the actual WMA. But the traffic here is pretty representative - I think - of the number of people you actually run into.
