RE: My thoughts on hunting over a bait pile.
Come on down and sit n this 95* south Texas heat in November sweatin for hours at a time on a well used trail to see a doe. come on down and set up on a rub line in some ot the thickest brush youve ever seen while 50 head of cattle mingle thru your area and youll wonder why we bait. |
RE: My thoughts on hunting over a bait pile.
If it is legal and the hunter uses any or all of these methods to take an animal in an ethical and respectful way then whats the big deal..You are not required to think like anybody else and they are not required to think like you. |
RE: My thoughts on hunting over a bait pile.
Absolutely! we should stick together.
My grandmother could be accused of baiting. when i first started hunting I went up to the U.P. of Michigan, on the shores of Lake Superior with my dad, and grandma and grandpa. It was a small 16 X 16' , 1/2 cuts of cedar poles that were only 6" diameter, ... Roof was the same with tin on top.... Everything chinked with mud, no insulation and wood stove for heat and cooking. Hunting was terrible, but the food and the company was the best. Grandma would make buckwheat pancakes every morning, and whatever was left she' d heave out the door for the birds....she loved to watch ' em. Trouble is she would always tell us how much the deer seemed to be partial to buckwheat pancakes. She' d report the # of deer she would see while we were out in the woods. She always saw more than us. Too bad she didn' t like shooting! |

RE: My thoughts on hunting over a bait pile.
OK, let me get this straight...175 acres being hunted by 7 people...that' s 25 acres per hunter...and we feel the need to use bait? And NO, I can' t imagine how hard it is to get the deer to come to you. I think I' m missing something here, especially since it' s Wisconsin, where deer numbers can reach up to 50-60 deer per square mile in some places.
Well, let me hunt here at home, no bait and not that many deer. Where hunting savy, discipline, knowing the game we hunt and outdoorsmanship are much more important.......than anything else. |
RE: My thoughts on hunting over a bait pile.
I' ve been there, done that. Lived in Texas for a total of about 10 years. Abilene, Dallas, Garland, and the HEB. Thats Hurst Euless, and Bedford in case you didn' t know. Just East of that other large city west of Dallas. Fort something? I' ve paid your outragous leese fees, I' ve sat your sorry excuse for wilderness, and I' ve smelled your damn goats, sheep and cattle. I' ve also sat in a few deer blinds and watched them filter in from the surrounding hills at the sound of the feeder going off. Like to see a side by side comparison of North and South deer mounts? So Tex, why don' t you Cowboy Up and get your ass out of that box overlooking the feeder, and learn how to hunt? Better yet, why don' t you bring your XXX Camo beaver hatted self up here and we' ll teach ya how to hunt. On second thought, better leave the beaver hats at home. We have critters in our woods that love to eat the beaver hats and whats ever under them. 1. Im a bow hunter. I Dont sit in a box. 2. Ive probobly forgotten more than youll ever know. 3. I guided for 4 years on the C-Ranch. In its time was one best bow hunting ranchs in the nation. 75+ P&Y in 5 seasons 4. I have had my own outfitting/guide service about 7 years ago. 5. I currently work with Critter Getter Archery and Outdoors. 6. I am an undergraduate at Texas A&M University Kingsville. Home of the Caeser Kleberg Wildlife Institiute. One of the best shools in the nation for wild life managment and research. 7. I have been published in the Journal of Wildlife Science with a study of Rhodamine -b (analytical dye) in its use in feed on White-tail deer. 8. I have been published in the Journal of the Texas Trophy Hunter (Nov-Dec 1997 page 152 if you have a copy) 9. I managed an archery shop for 4 years while attending college. 10. I really dont think theres a whole lot you can teach me, but please enlighten me with your knowlege of the Odocoileus Viginianus and its habitiat..And maybe a few of your hunting stradegies. Thanks Tex |

RE: My thoughts on hunting over a bait pile.
Hey tex don' t let someone with a name like nub get your feathers ruffled!:D
It never ceases to amaze me that folks really think the deer just run on in to feeders going off. now turkeys will and thats why you can' t hunt over feeders in turkey season in arkansas. I can' t see the difference from a feeder going off (if it worked like some think) and the smell of a hot doe! I mean a buck during the rut really only has one thing on his mind and that odor is what he wants! My opinion of it is that folks hunt different in different parts of the country . my methods won' t really work in the west and theres really don' t work here. so why condemn? tex if you really need someone to hunt with i am available! really no problem!;):D |
RE: My thoughts on hunting over a bait pile.
Well thanks for the offer Tex. I' m not real sure the wife would be too crasy about me running off to Texas just after I return from Ontario moose hunting. Specialy if I get another moose. She won' t think we could eat all that meat before I go moose hunting again in 04. But, Ill run it up her flag pole and see if she salutes.;)
Most people think I' m an OK fella too Tex. I' ll tell ya what, if your ever up WI. way, we have a few Chronically wasted deer we' re trying to eradicate from my neighborhood. Sorry, thats about the best I can offer from home. Less you' d like to try the big woods up north. We could rough it. I have hunted down San Antonio way a while back. Can' t remember the name. It was bow only, paid by the day. Was looking for a lunker hog, but settled for a Corsican Ram instead. I did hunts some Axis and Sitka doe one spring around Kerrville also. I can' t see your other pic. Is that the 10? I' ll drop ya an email, the wife just said I' m burning the steaks. brb |
