Pee Bottle or Not
OK hunters,
I've heard both opinions on this one..Up to 2 weeks ago I didn't use one. The other day I was talking to a fellow PE teacher who kind of changed my mind with this story. He says..."I owned a small farm in Idaho. I had crops growing very close to the house and the deer would wake me up from thier loud eatting. What everyone uses up here to get rid of the deer is bear pee. All the deer left when I put the deer pee out." Now ..from this story it appears that the deer can differentiate between different pee and other smells. Now, if I planned to hunt a spot over and over again..I'd be peeing in a plastic bottle. DEER ARE INCREDIBLE ANIMALS..ESPECIALLY IN A PUBLIC WMA. What's you all's opinion on pee bottles? Thanks, C7 |
Waste of room to carry one. We shoot 150" and above deer every year and the majority of my piss ends up on scrapes on my way in the woods and out of the woods. I have yet to be busted by the smell of piss alone...
|
I used to carry a pee bottle with me. You can get to the point of absolute ridiculousness when it comes to doing things to prevent getting busted. That is one of them. I've killed deer soon after a piss. As long as you don't piss on your tarsal glands, I think you'll be OK.
|
Pee off the stand. By the time a deer gets close enough to care hes DRT.
|
Well, I was careful to remind the readers that this is public land..
1st of all..good spots on public property is not that easy. 2ndly..a decent spot where you plan to hunt lot...I wouldn't want to do anything to cause the deer to advoid this area in the future.I'll wait to see what the rest think...I haven't packed the plastic bottle yet..just wondering what the pros do. C7 |
I pee out of the stand and not a problem.
|
I piss out of the tree stand have never have got busted.
|
I carry the square plastic army surplus water bottle for that . I have used it up to 8 times in a dark to dark stand.Works great quiet, camo and a large hole. Two days on the same stand and a deer will know you moved in .If you walk a deer trail 3 days in a row you will see the deer will stop walking on it .I am sure some places the deer are use to people traffic more than others.
|
I always carry one, but since I started taking BP medicine I fill one up before the morning is out on stand. I may have to start carrying two.
|
I went out last year with a friend to just some cams the day before opeing day and he piss on the ladder of my stand killed my first deer with a bow that next morning. I piss a bottle but i dont think it matters. if you play the wind the right way then you should have not need to worry

Two days on the same stand and a deer will know you moved in
APPRECIATE THE COMMENT..MAKES SENSE TO ME |

Check out my "urinal" which goes into the ground under the stand....
Don't know if makes a difference but I don't have to hang it out the window anymore LOL. |
I pee out of my stand, just don't pee on the steps!!
|
i have shot one buck, and a doe while my tallwacker was hanging out of my pants cuz i didn't have time to put it away before i shot. But the area i hunt the deer are used to smelling people, and we all drink beer and pee outside, so they get used to the smell all year long.
|
I used a bottle in public lands but now that I'm hunting on a friends farm, I just pee wherever I'm at. My friend pees outside spring, summer, and fall, so I think that they're used to it. They're also used to the smell of oil, plastic, metal, and anything else man made, so the smell of the blind and anything in it doesn't seem to bother them. Kind of nice.
|
IMO, every little bit helps. Hunt the wind, use scent control, wash your clothes in scent free detergent, get dressed in the field and don't wear your clothes in the vehicle. I have had deer come right up under my stand and when they get down wind of me I can tell they know something is "off". But you also said public land which is what I hunt. You have no idea what other hunters have done. They could be peeing or worse right next to the tree you want to set up in.
|
yup
I keep a few in the stands....

I am a strong proponent that whitetail body language is advantageous to the hunter, and not enough hunters seem to know the difference between an alert deer, and a relaxed deer (though many claim to know). Do you even know? Its a question you have to ask yourself. Lucky for me, I have had the time all year round to study the behaviors of whitetails, though I am no professional I believe that my time in the woods with my photography and scouting, has allowed me on many times to take a deer I otherwise wouldn't have been able to had I not known the posture and body language. |
I've never carried a pee bottle and never will. I can't imagine trying to dig through my back making noise. If a tried to piss in a bottle from my tree stand I'd probably piss all over the bottle my hand and clothes.
|
I agree..finding the bottle can be a problem..too much motion..good observation sir..
The pee won't make noise going into plastic but diffently too much motion getting that bottle out of the sack...especially for us 14 foot high guys. I may forget the bottle too..I hate motion..because in my situation..They can see me before I see them..I'm in a pine tree 100yds looking into a THICKET..I mostly read all day to keep myself still..that has worked for me since I don't like going higher than 14 foot. I wouldn't go 30 foot for 1000.00 bucks I masy go 20 foot for 500.00 LOL |

When you're climbing up the tree in your stand....DON'T LOOK DOWN! ha!ha!ha!
|
I did that once..a masn told me I had to get 20 foot..I got about 17..but now I just hunt farther away to compensate for the 14...worked really good. During archery I had a doe 8 yds away and I was only 12 foot up..

I will not pee near my stand. Human urine smells totally different than deer urine. Anyone that cannot figure that one out needs some help.
It may or may not disturb thier routes, but the bottom line is I try to keep the area as natural as possible. I may or may not notice that my dogs pee'd on the carpet tonight, but then again, I might take note. A deer that takes note of anything is a suspicius deer. It probably doens't mean much to gun hunters, but bow hunters should think twice. |
Makes sense Mark...that pro I met told me that to..said deer will advoid suspicious areas

I have heard the same argument from smokers also.
I smoke, but not in the stand. I pee, but not in the stand. I carry a bottle. It is always in the sidepocket of my pack so it is easy to get to. does it help? well who knows but I know for sure it doesn't hurt. |
I have peed on deer trails and sat back to watch a deer's reaction, they smell it but don't seem to care, BUT I didn't see any mature bucks to see their reaction.....
|
I never used a "P-Bottle" for the past "umteen" years. I have 2 favorite deer stands that I like to use, one is "My Morning Stand" and the other is "My Night Watch". Both stands take advantage of thermal winds and normal wind. I have relieved myself MANY times in the past.
This year, it was a bit different. A pal of mine asked IF he could use my stands when I wasn't there. OK, I said...... He is a fanatic about using a "P-Bottle", so I decided that I would also because of his belief in them (while in HIS stands) and I wanted to be a NICE guy!!!! Opening Morning.... In my stand...... Got the urge......... Rummaged thru the ruck sack to find bottle...... Kicked over my LAST cup of coffee....... Dropped several items from ruck sack to the ground (15 feet)........ Unzipped and fought through 4 layers of clothing...... Finally found the "item" I was searching for.......... Dribbled a significant amount of warm liquid on underware, thermals, polar fleece, and wind breaker pants........ Finally got everything aligned properly and dispensed........ Making sure that I followed proper protocol to insure that I did not violate "No matter how you shake and dance, the last few drops fall in your pants".......... Noticed that during the procedure droplets appeared on the floor of the stand and a minor amount on the stock of my 30-06 (standing in the corner)..... Went to screw on the top, dropped the cap......... Holding the "open container" in one hand, tried to retrieve the cap which had rolled under the bench.......... Succeeded in spilling about half the contents during this operation........ Gave up in disgust and poured the remainder over the side.............. Killed a "crotch horn" about 17 minutes later............. Incidentally, by this time the "warm liquid" saturating 4 layers had turned ICE COLD..... So much for using a bottle !!!!! |
Sounds like poor motor skills to me..LOL on the other hand..I carefully unzip the pack which is hanging at a perfect angle to manipulate stuff from the bag..reach in ..while maintaining a watch for deer. AH,,theres the bottle..carefully unscrew cap sticking it in my front pocket..ok..unzip pants pull out penis..observe to make sure pee is going in the bottle..finished..except a few drops ..totally normal..Screw on cap..carefully put back in pack..
Done deal...{ -; |
Pee bottle :-)
|
Hmmmmmmmm..... By Motor Skills, Chuck7, you're right....... I do NOT have the skills necessary to build a motorized device to accomplish this delicate maneuver !!!!!! LOL !!!!
|
Sorry fellow...I'm a special education teacher...Motor skills means to be able to manipulate small objects with your fingers. { -;

Back to the subject...for us few who hunt pressured WMAs and see about 2 bucks the entire year..if that....we need all the help we can get..I would see a pee bottle as an aid ..not a hinderance.
A few years ago I applied { Yes I said applied} to hunt on a 700.00 north Florida lease. The first question they ask was if I used a pee bottle ..I said no..I was turned down. They said we only want serious hunters. |
PEE AWAY..I have never used a bottle. Your not doing it over & over in the same spot. I just scrape the ground down to dirt pee & cover it. Shot many deer and I dont believe it makes a difference

A coupla semi-related situations within this "thread theme".....
First, when using the tree stand, it is an "all day affair" (pre-dawn to dark) most of the time. AND, I am NOT a very good "sitter", even with seeing critters through out the sit. Therefore, I pack accordingly to try and keep the boredom and "antsy-ness" out of the equation. Coffee, water, lunch, munchies, book/magazine, radio (with ear plug) for entertainment, music, and weather, kindle (maybe), GPS, Walkman, and etc. Have even thought about a laptop with Air Card, but have not gone that far YET!!!!! My stand platform is good sized (4'x6') with 1/2 side walls to hide movement. Any thoughts and/or comments on items to prevent boredom? Secondly, and I NEVER have read on ANY forum a discussion on the "other bodily function"......... Some people can "hold it" all day, others can't..... I'm in the "can't" category. I have NEVER satisfied this condition while still in the stand. I just get down and either go back to Camp (about a mile away) or go an area we all call "Hershey Squirts". This area is pretty well saturated with "land mines" and therefore is NOT used for any hunting purposes. This area is about 1/2 mile from my stand, in the opposite direction from Camp. So......what do others do? If on public land, "spoiling" the hunting of others is NOT a nice thing to do. Not to mention the vulnerability of being subject to a "public exposure" violation. (Come to think of it, has anyone ever gotten or heard of any hunter getting cited for either #1 or #2 while in the woods). Fortunately, we hunt exclusively on private land, but even then one could probably be cited for public urination and/or defecation. In our case the warden/DEC/SP/ individual would have to walk up a rather steep mountain for about 2 miles (NO roads) and would really have to be a dedicated individual. He would have to be the same person that would be collecting DNA data from "rabbit pellets" so he could cite the deer!!! |

I read my New testament to beat boredom it adds expectation to me seeing it builds faith...every 4 chapters is about 1 hour worth of sitting..I aim to read one of the 4 gospels for any all day sit.. #2. I had a friend stop on the way to hunting..walk a few yds about 4:00AM and got cited for taking a dump.. In the hunting woods I seriously doubt if anyone would ever be cited. If one is seeing tons of deer I doubt if he would take this thread serious..If one had struck out a few years and hunts in a highly pressured area..yeah..he's going to try and get every advantage possible. |
I hunt on private land and have never had an issue with peeing from my stand. My freezer is full right now, so I've been experimenting. The buck in this video http://picasaweb.google.com/Nighthun...38361976311170 walks a couple feet away from where I took a dump an hour before. Didn't seem to care one bit. Granted, he's not a big, mature buck.
|
Nice video..now check out this video of a HNI member on the first day on an Illinois hunt..There are a few bucks on here under his stand but note later..when the 130 inch plus walks by..how he sniffs the air much differently than the younger bucks before him...have patience he is at the END of the video..very nice buck..acts totallly different....at the very end this hunter chooses to shoot a coyote instead....beats me LOL
