Geting On Stand
#11
So far it seems the average is on stand at least 1/2 hour to 45 min. before legal light and 3 hours to 3 1/2 before sunset. This is my practice as well with the all day sit during the rut. More input on this is desired sound off some more of you on how you do it.

If you can't sit all day, at least try to sit an hour longer than the hunters around you. Deer quickly pattern other hunters, and when everyone else heads back in at 10am they may bump a deer your way. Deer aren't on a set schedule, especially during the rut, so you never know when you'll see one.
One thing I have learned about morning hunts, however, is that it's better to arrive a little early than late. Nothing is worse than trying to rush to the stand in attempt to beat the rising sun. Whenever that happens, I invariably seem to kick a deer off my stand. If you get there in the dark, you can get away with more movement in getting set up.

I usually get to my stand just as it is breaking light. Not light enough to see to shoot but just light enough to walk in without a flash light. I do go in when it is dark at times too. Just depends how well I can time getting to the woods.
It wouldn't hurt to get there a little earlier though because I have shot deer after being in my stand for 15 minutes or less. I take a chance on getting there when they do by going in right at day break.
