I'd go with a .22 rimfire short rifle.

A whitetail deer at 500 M Looks like an ant, why would you want to shoot that far ?
There's a forum member that posts 1000-1200 yard shots on a regular basis.

IMHO a 7mm or .338 is overkill for deer hunting. .270, .308, and 30-06 are all great deer rifles and if you handload and have a good scope (not to mention know how to shoot) you can reach out as far as you need to for deer hunting. If you really need to shoot 500yards then I agree that you should get that out of your system at the range

In fact I've never shot a deer much over 100 yds.

IMO, hunting should be about the hunt, not the length of the shot, regardless of your ability to hit at long range. What have you done when you shoot a deer that far away? You didn't hunt it, all you did was make a long shot.
Hi! I'm new to the forum and I'm so glad I found a place where we can share opinions & know-hows. I've hunted whitetail with my scoped Marlin lever-action in .44 Mag, closest at 80 - 100 yds. Most hunting buddies say I'm old-fashioned, by my tool does work. I wonder if I'm breaking any holy hunters commandment.
Take care

Breaking a holy commandment? I hardly think so. The 44 mag is perfect for deer out to 100 yds.

Christianson Arms, I think that is the name. They advertise on the Outdoor Channel. They advertise some unreal accuracy at unbelievable distances. Has anyone ever tried them? I believe they do shots at 700-800 yds. They are unreal, just wondering if anyone has one or shot one.

If you get a good outline (snow) it would not be unusual. When I was in we shot at 500 yards with m-14s and m-16s at half a man target with open sights and I never missed. Ten minutes, ten rounds. I don't care to hunt that way, but it is not a ridiculous idea.

Even at western ranges, a 7mm or 300 mag would be more than enough out to reasonable distances. I agree with a few other members though, 500 meters, is not hunting. Im sorry, it's shooting. And I won't knock anybody for wanting to do that, because we all need to stick together but shooting is different from hunting.
